What Is 8090 Aluminum Alloy?<\/h2>\n

8090 (EN AW-8090, UNS A98090, designation AlLi2.5Cu1.3Mg1) is an aluminum-lithium alloy in the 8xxx series. The deliberate addition of lithium lowers density and raises the elastic modulus, giving designers a material that is lighter and stiffer than traditional aerospace aluminum. Copper and magnesium provide precipitation strengthening, while controlled zirconium additions refine the grain structure. 8090 is used where every kilogram matters \u2014 primarily aircraft fuselage skins, wing panels, and structural components for aerospace and high-end transport.<\/p>\n

T8<\/strong> \u2014 peak-aged condition delivering the highest strength and stiffness; the default choice for primary aerospace structure. T4<\/strong> \u2014 solution heat-treated and naturally aged; higher ductility for forming before final aging. O<\/strong> \u2014 fully annealed, used where maximum formability is needed prior to fabrication. Select T8 for load-bearing skins and stiffeners, T4 where forming is required, and O for the softest starting condition.<\/p>\n

Low Density & High Stiffness<\/h3>\n

The lithium addition lowers density by about 8-10% and raises Young’s modulus versus standard aerospace alloys, improving the stiffness-to-weight ratio of structures.<\/p>\n

Fatigue & Corrosion Resistance<\/h3>\n

8090 offers good fatigue crack growth resistance and acceptable general corrosion performance; clad sheet versions are available for enhanced corrosion protection.<\/p>\n

Formability & Machinability<\/h3>\n

The alloy machines well in the T8 condition. Forming is best carried out in T4 or O tempers before final aging. Welding is limited and should be evaluated case by case.<\/p>\n
