What Is 3003 Aluminum Sheet?<\/h2>\n

3003 aluminum sheet is one of the most widely used Al-Mn (aluminum-manganese) wrought products in the aluminum industry. As a non-heat-treatable alloy, 3003 derives its mechanical properties from cold working \u2014 not from solution heat treatment like 6061 or 7075. The strength of a 3003 sheet is controlled by the degree of cold reduction during rolling, expressed by the H temper designation: H12 (quarter hard), H14 (half hard), H16 (three-quarter hard), and H18 (full hard). Annealing returns the material to the fully soft O temper.<\/p>\n

With 1.0\u20131.5% manganese as its primary alloying element, 3003 sheet offers approximately 20% higher strength than 1100 (commercially pure) aluminum sheet while retaining excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. It is the most commonly stocked general-purpose aluminum sheet alloy and is approved under major international standards including ASTM B209, EN 485, ISO 6361, and EN 573-3.<\/p>\n

3003 sheet is supplied in both flat sheet and coil forms. Coil stock is suitable for continuous roll forming, stamping, and slitting operations. Common thicknesses range from 0.3 mm to 6.0 mm, with standard widths up to 2,600 mm. 3003 sheet offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, including in marine, industrial, and rural environments. The manganese content suppresses grain-boundary corrosion, and 3003 performs well in contact with food products, mild chemicals, fresh water, and petroleum-based fluids. It is commonly used without protective coatings in roofing, siding, food processing equipment, and chemical storage applications. For saltwater immersion or aggressive chemical exposure, consider 5052 sheet instead.<\/p>\n

Formability & Deep Drawing<\/h3>\n

3003 sheet shows outstanding cold formability \u2014 it can be deep drawn, spun, stamped, roll formed, embossed, and bent to tight radii without cracking. In the O temper, 3003 is one of the most formable aluminum alloys available, making it the first choice for cookware (pots, pans, baking sheets) and complex sheet metal enclosures. Even in the H14 temper, 3003 retains sufficient ductility for most general sheet metal forming operations. The H18 temper should be reserved for flat or minimally formed parts.<\/p>\n

3003 sheet is rated as highly weldable using TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), oxyacetylene, and resistance welding. Filler metal 4043 or 1100 is typically recommended for fusion welding. Note that welding will anneal the heat-affected zone (HAZ), reducing local strength to near-O temper levels in cold-worked tempers (H14, H18, H22). For structural applications where post-weld strength matters, this softening should be considered in the design.<\/p>\n
