What Is 7005 Aluminum?

7005 is strengthened by zinc and magnesium with added manganese for corrosion resistance and strength. Unlike the very high-strength 7075, 7005 is formulated to weld well and keep useful properties in the as-welded condition, which is why it appears in boat hulls, rail vehicles, and welded frames. Its strength is higher than 6061 and close to, though generally below, 7075.

7005 welds readily with TIG/MIG using 5356 filler; post-weld artificial aging (T53/T6 route) can restore strength. It machines well and can be anodized, though 7xxx colors may vary slightly. For marine use, pair with appropriate surface finishing and isolation from dissimilar metals.
