5083-O/H32/H116 Aluminum Wire

5083 aluminum wire is a non-heat-treatable, high-magnesium alloy (AlMg4.5Mn0.7) that sets the standard for corrosion resistance in harsh saltwater and chemical environments. It offers the highest strength among non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys, with excellent weldability and toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. Linsy supplies it in O, H32, and H116 tempers for welding filler and forming.

Available forms: wire / rod coil
Common tempers: O / H32 / H116 / H111 / H112
Processing support: Spooling, straightening, drawing, welding filler prep
Quality documents: MTC report with every order

What Is 5083 Aluminum Wire?

5083 Aluminum Wire is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy (AlMg4.5Mn0.7) supplied by Linsy Aluminum. It is one of the strongest work-hardenable grades and is widely specified for marine, offshore, and cryogenic service because of its excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and its ability to retain strength after welding. Common tempers include O, H111, H112, H116, and H321.

Mechanical Properties by Temper

Values below are typical room-temperature properties for 5083 wire and rod. Actual results depend on temper and diameter and are reported on the MTC.

Temper Tensile Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (MPa) Elongation (%) Brinell Hardness
O 275 – 350 110 – 145 16 – 21 ~75
H111 275 – 350 ≥175 16 ~75
H112 ≥275 ≥125 ≥12 ~75
H116 / H321 305 – 385 ≥215 ≥10 ~85
H32 305 – 345 ≥215 ≥12 ~85

Temper Selection Guide

  • O (annealed): maximum ductility and corrosion resistance; used where forming is required.
  • H111 / H112: minor strain-hardened or as-fabricated; good general structural use.
  • H116 / H321: strain-hardened and stabilized for marine plate and extrusions; the default choice for shipbuilding and offshore structures.
  • H32: strain-hardened to half-hard; good for sheet requiring moderate strength and formability.

5083 is non-heat-treatable — tempers are produced by strain hardening and stabilization, not by solution heat treatment.

Key Characteristics

Ultimate Corrosion Resistance

Among the best aluminum alloys for seawater and chemical exposure.

Highest Strength (Non-Heat-Treatable)

The strongest work-hardenable aluminum grade, ideal where weight must be minimized.

Weldability

Excellent as welding filler; compatible with 5083 and 5086 base metals.

Cryogenic Toughness

Retains ductility and strength at very low temperatures.

Applications

  • Shipbuilding and marine structures
  • Cryogenic storage tanks
  • Pressure vessels
  • Offshore platforms
  • Welding filler wire

Processing & Surface Finish Notes

5083 welds well with conventional processes (TIG/MIG) and retains most of its strength in the weld zone. For welding filler, ER5183 or ER5356 wire is commonly used. The alloy has only moderate machinability compared with heat-treatable grades, and cutting tools should account for its gummy chip formation.

  • Cutting: sawing, CNC machining, laser cutting
  • Forming: good in O and soft tempers; springback increases with hardening
  • Surface: mill finish standard; anodizing, polishing, powder coating, PVC film available
  • Heat input during welding should be controlled to avoid softening of adjacent material

Quality Documents & Inspection

Every 5083 order ships with a material test certificate (MTC) that reports the actual chemical analysis and mechanical results for the supplied lot. Third-party SGS test reports are available on request. Standard mill inspections cover dimensional tolerance, surface condition, and tensile verification per the ordered specification.

  • MTC (EN 10204 3.1 or equivalent) with every order
  • Dimensional and visual inspection at shipment
  • Optional ultrasonic or penetration testing for plate and heavy sections
  • RoHS and REACH documentation available on request
