2024 aluminum square bar is a high-strength, copper-alloyed grade valued for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio, good fatigue resistance and machinability. Supplied by Linsy in T3, T4, T351 and T851 tempers, it is widely used in aerospace structures, fasteners, hydraulic fittings and high-stress machine components. We offer cut-to-length square bar with standard mill finish or custom surface processing, backed by full material traceability.

2024 aluminum is an Al-Cu-Mg alloy from the 2xxx series, recognized for its high strength, good fatigue life and acceptable machinability. The square bar form delivers a rigid geometry that is easy to fixture, stack and machine into brackets, cleats, structural joints and actuator components. It is not as corrosion resistant as 5xxx or 6xxx alloys, so exposed applications often require cladding, anodizing or protective finishes.
Common tempers for square bar include O (annealed), T3 (solution treated, cold worked and naturally aged), T4 (solution treated and naturally aged), T351 (stress-relieved by stretching after solution treatment) and T851 (solution treated, stress relieved and artificially aged). Each temper trades formability against strength, so selection depends on the forming and loading requirements of the part.
Linsy supplies 2024 aluminum square bar in standard and custom sizes. Typical stock is produced to ASTM B211, AMS-QQ-A-225/6 and EN 573 equivalents, with mill finish supplied as standard. Cut-to-length service is available to reduce downstream machining setup time.

The table below lists typical mechanical properties for 2024 square bar in common tempers. Values are approximate and should be verified against the material test certificate for each heat lot.
| Property | 2024-O | 2024-T3 | 2024-T4 | 2024-T351 | 2024-T851 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (MPa) | ≈ 185 | ≈ 480 | ≈ 440 | ≈ 460 | ≈ 515 |

| Elastic Modulus (GPa) | ≈ 73 | ≈ 73 | ≈ 73 | ≈ 73 | ≈ 73 |
| Temper | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| O (Annealed) | Forming, bending, shallow drawing | Lowest strength, highest formability; strength increases with natural aging after forming. |
| T3 | High strength with some formability | Cold worked and naturally aged; good balance for structural brackets and clips. |
| T4 | Parts requiring moderate forming before aging | Solution treated and naturally aged; can be formed then aged to T6 or T81 if process allows. |
| T351 | Stress-corrosion-sensitive machined parts | Stress relieved by stretching; reduced residual stress and improved dimensional stability during machining. |
| T851 | High-strength, precision-machined components | Artificially aged after stress relief; highest strength among common square bar tempers. |
2024 offers one of the highest strength levels of any aluminum alloy in the as-supplied condition, making it a frequent choice for aerospace and transport structures where every kilogram matters.
The alloy performs well under cyclic loading. T3 and T351 tempers are often selected for components that experience repeated stress, such as wing fittings and control linkages.
2024 machines readily in T3 and T351 tempers, producing long chips and good surface finishes. T851 is harder and requires more rigid setups and appropriate tooling. All tempers should be kept dry or with compatible coolants to avoid corrosion staining.
2024 is not recommended for fusion welding because copper reduces weldability and creates crack-sensitive microstructures. Joining is normally done with rivets, bolts or adhesive bonding. Corrosion resistance is lower than 6xxx or 5xxx alloys; use anodizing, cladding or protective paint in aggressive environments.
Linsy provides several in-house and partner processing options for 2024 square bar:
Note: 2024 is not suitable for fusion welding. Specify riveted, bolted or bonded joints in your design. Heat treatment beyond supplier-controlled processes may reduce corrosion resistance if not properly managed.
Every order ships with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) covering alloy designation, temper, dimensions, heat number and chemical composition. Additional documentation can be arranged:
T351 is stress relieved by stretching after solution treatment and is naturally aged, offering good machinability and lower residual stress. T851 is stress relieved and artificially aged, giving higher strength but lower formability. T851 is preferred for high-strength, precision-machined parts.
Fusion welding of 2024 is generally not recommended due to poor weldability and reduced corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. Mechanical fastening or adhesive bonding is preferred.
Common side widths range from 6 mm to 150 mm, with lengths from 1,000 mm to 6,000 mm. Custom sizes and tolerances are available on request.
Bare 2024 has lower corrosion resistance than anodized 6xxx or 5xxx alloys. For outdoor or marine use, specify anodizing, cladding or a protective coating.
MOQ depends on size and temper. We support small trial orders for standard sizes and larger mill-direct quantities for custom specifications.
Typical custom lead time is 10–60 days after order confirmation, depending on material availability, processing and destination.
Every shipment includes a Mill Test Certificate (MTC). SGS or other third-party inspection reports can be arranged on request.
