5356 Aluminum Alloy

5356 is a high-magnesium 5xxx aluminum alloy (AlMg5CrTiMn), most widely used as a welding filler metal for MIG and TIG joining of 5xxx and 6xxx alloys. It offers good strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance, and is supplied in wire and sheet across O and H22 tempers.

Available forms: sheet / plate / bar / tube / wire / coil
Common tempers: O, H22
Processing support: CNC machining / laser cutting / welding / anodizing
Quality documents: MTC report with every order

What Is 5356 Aluminum Alloy Aluminum?

5356 Aluminum Alloy (AlMg5CrTiMn) is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium (5xxx) alloy. Its strength comes from magnesium in solid solution and strain hardening, not heat treatment. It offers good corrosion resistance—especially in marine and industrial environments—and welds well, which makes it a common choice for structures exposed to water, chemicals, or cycling loads.

H22 320 200 12 75

Mechanical values are representative room-temperature typicals for plate, sheet, or bar and should be confirmed against the ordered thickness and the supplied MTC.

Temper Selection Guide

  • O (annealed): softest, best formability and corrosion resistance; for deep drawing and welding.
  • H1xx / H2xx / H3xx: strain-hardened tempers with increasing strength and decreasing ductility.
  • H116 / H321: stabilized tempers for marine plate with good exfoliation-corrosion resistance.

Choose the softest temper that meets the strength need to keep forming and welding straightforward.

Key Characteristics

Welding filler alloy

One of the most common 5xxx filler metals for MIG and TIG welding of 5xxx and 6xxx base alloys.

Strength and ductility

Higher magnesium gives good strength and elongation compared with 4043/4045 fillers.

Anodized appearance

Produces a clear to slightly gray anodized finish that can match many base alloys.

Applications

  • MIG and TIG welding wire
  • Marine components (hulls, decks, tanks)
  • Structural frames and pressure vessels
  • Bicycle, automotive, and trailer parts
  • Aluminum scaffolding and piping

Processing & Surface Finish Notes

5356 Aluminum Alloy is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy, so strength comes from strain hardening (H-tempers), not heat treatment. It cuts, drills, and welds well with standard aluminum tooling.

  • Cutting: CNC machining, laser cutting, and sawing are supported.
  • Welding: TIG and MIG welding with matching or compatible 5xxx filler.
  • Forming: good cold formability in O and soft H-tempers.
  • Surface finish: mill finish, anodizing, polishing, powder coating, or PVC film protection.

Note: anodized color of 5xxx alloys can differ slightly from 6xxx alloys; confirm the finish on a sample if color match matters.

Quality Documents & Inspection

Every 5086 order ships with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) that reports the actual chemical analysis and mechanical results for the supplied material. Third-party SGS or equivalent test reports can be arranged on request for project or tender requirements.

  • MTC (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) with every order
  • Dimensional inspection against the agreed tolerance
  • Surface and visual check before packing
  • Material traceability by heat / lot number

5356 Aluminum Alloy Aluminum FAQ

Is 5356 heat treatable?

No. 5356 is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy; it is most often used as welding filler metal.

5356 vs 4043 filler?

5356 (5xxx, higher Mg) gives higher strength and better color match on anodized parts; 4043 (4xxx, Si) flows more easily but is lower strength and darker after anodizing.

What base alloys can 5356 weld?

It is widely used to weld 5xxx and 6xxx series aluminum where higher joint strength is needed.
