What Is 6106 Aluminum Alloy?

6106 (EN AW-6106, AlMgSiMn) is a medium-strength 6000-series alloy with magnesium, silicon, and manganese. It offers a favorable balance of extrudability, corrosion resistance, weldability, and moderate strength, which suits structural and transportation components that need to be light yet durable.

Temper Selection Guide

  • O: softest, best formability.
  • T4: naturally aged; good formability with moderate strength.
  • T6: artificially aged; highest strength of the listed tempers.

Key Characteristics of 6106 Aluminum

Extrudability

Good die fill and surface quality make 6106 well suited to complex profiles.

Corrosion Resistance & Weldability

Good corrosion resistance and readily weldable for transport and structural assemblies.

Moderate Strength

Sits between soft 6xxx grades and high-strength structural 6082.

Common Applications

  • Automotive body and structural components
  • Bicycle frames
  • Railway and transportation structures
  • Marine and architectural structures
  • Heat exchangers

Processing & Surface Finish Notes

Machining

6106 machines well in the soft (O) and solution-heat-treated tempers; T6/T651 tempers are stronger and can work-harden at the cutting edge, so sharp tooling and appropriate feeds are recommended.

Welding

6106 is generally weldable using TIG or MIG processes with matching or 4043/5356 filler, depending on the service requirement. Welded zones lose some strength compared with the base temper — design accordingly for structural use.

Forming & Heat Treatment

Forming is best done in the O or T4 condition. Final strength is developed by the specified temper; do not re-heat-treat without confirming the alloy’s response.

Surface Finish

Common finishes include anodizing, polishing, and powder coating. Anodizing quality depends on surface preparation, so confirm finish requirements before production.

Quality Documents & Inspection

Every 6106 order ships with an MTC. Third-party SGS reports can be arranged on request. Confirm the required standard (ASTM, EN, GB) when ordering.
