8009 Aluminum Alloy

8009 aluminum (also referenced as FVS121 / AlFe8.7Si1.8V1.3) is a dispersion-strengthened 8000-series alloy built around a fine iron–silicon–vanadium intermetallic network rather than traditional age hardening. This gives it high strength that is retained at elevated temperatures, plus good fatigue resistance. Linsy supplies 8009 in O, T6, and T8 tempers across sheet, bar, and tube, with custom dimensions and MTC documentation for every order.

Available forms: sheet / plate / bar / tube / wire
Common tempers: O / T6 / T8
Processing support: CNC machining / laser cutting / polishing / anodizing
Quality documents: MTC report with every order

What Is 8009 Aluminum Alloy?

8009 is a powder-metallurgy-derived dispersion-strengthened alloy whose strength comes from a uniform dispersion of thermally stable Al–Fe–Si–V intermetallics. Unlike 2xxx/7xxx alloys, its strength does not collapse at moderately high service temperatures, making it attractive for aerospace and engine-adjacent structural parts. It is not a lithium-bearing alloy; its chemistry is iron–silicon–vanadium based.

  • T6 – solution heat-treated and aged; highest usable strength.
  • T8 – cold-worked before aging; slightly higher strength and stability.

Key Characteristics of 8009 Aluminum

High-Temperature Strength

The dispersed intermetallics resist coarsening, so strength holds up better than age-hardened alloys at elevated temperature.

Fatigue Resistance

Good fatigue performance supports rotating and cyclic-load aerospace components.

Corrosion & Weldability

Generally good corrosion resistance; welding is possible but reduces the dispersion-strengthened benefit — confirm with engineering for critical parts.

Common Applications

  • Aerospace structural and engine-adjacent components
  • High-temperature or fatigue-critical parts
  • Lightweight replacements for steel in elevated-temperature service

Processing & Surface Finish Notes

8009 machines comparably to other high-strength aluminum grades. Because its strength derives from dispersion rather than precipitation, prolonged exposure above roughly 200–250°C should be reviewed with engineering. Standard anodizing and polishing are applicable.

Quality Documents & Inspection

Every shipment is accompanied by an MTC report detailing chemical composition and mechanical test results. Third-party inspection and SGS test reports can be arranged on request. Incoming and outgoing inspection covers dimensions, surface condition, and mechanical properties.

8009 Aluminum FAQ

Is 8009 a lithium alloy?

No. 8009 is an iron–silicon–vanadium dispersion-strengthened alloy, not an Al-Li alloy. Some sources confuse it with 8090; the chemistry here follows the AA 8009 (AlFeSiV) designation.

How does 8009 compare to 7075?

8009 keeps more strength at elevated temperature, while 7075 peaks higher at room temperature. Choice depends on service temperature and fatigue needs.

Can 8009 be welded?

Welding is possible but softens the dispersion-strengthened structure; evaluate for non-critical joints or use mechanical fastening.
