What Is 2034 Aluminum Alloy?

2034 aluminum is a heat-treatable alloy in the 2xxx series, primarily alloyed with copper (3.8–4.9%) and magnesium (1.2–1.8%). It is designed for applications requiring high strength and good fatigue resistance, particularly in aerospace structures.

2034 shares compositional similarities with 2024 (the most widely used 2xxx aerospace alloy) but features a higher magnesium content, which contributes to improved fatigue performance. Its corrosion resistance is moderate — protective coatings or Alclad are recommended for exposed environments.

Note: 2034 is a less commonly specified alloy than 2024 or 2014. Designers should confirm availability and specification coverage with suppliers before committing to this alloy in new projects.

Cold-worked and naturally aged. Good balance of strength and formability. Suitable for parts that undergo moderate forming after solution treatment.

Solution heat-treated and naturally aged. Highest tensile strength in the 2034 family. Used for structural components where maximum load capacity is required.

T351 Temper

Solution heat-treated, stress-relieved by stretching, then naturally aged. T351 is the preferred temper for thick plate and bar where residual stress must be minimized — essential for precision-machined aerospace parts that require dimensional stability.

2034 delivers tensile strength of 380–430 MPa while maintaining aluminum’s inherent weight advantage. This makes it suitable for weight-critical aerospace structures.

The elevated magnesium content (1.2–1.8%) compared to 2024 gives 2034 improved fatigue performance under cyclic loading — an important property for aircraft skin and structural ribs.

Moderate Machinability

2034 machines reasonably well in T3/T4 temper but is not as free-cutting as 2011 or 2030. Chip formation is moderate; carbide tooling is recommended for production runs.

Like other high-copper 2xxx alloys, 2034 has moderate corrosion resistance and is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in T4 temper. Alclad sheet or chemical conversion coatings are recommended for exposed applications.

  • 热处理: Solution treatment at approximately 495–505°C, followed by cold working (T3) or natural aging (T4/T351). Artificial aging to T6 is possible but not commonly specified for 2034.
  • 焊接: Not recommended for structural welding. Resistance welding is feasible for non-critical joints. Mechanical fastening is preferred for load-bearing connections.
  • 阳极氧化: Type II and Type III anodizing are applicable. Copper content produces a darker finish compared to 6xxx alloys.

How does 2034 differ from 2024?

2034 has higher magnesium content (1.2–1.8% vs 2024’s 1.2–1.8% in a similar range) and higher silicon (0.5–1.2% vs 2024’s 0.50 max). These differences contribute to better fatigue resistance but may reduce weldability. 2024 remains more widely specified and more readily available.

Is 2034 aluminum weldable?
