6061 aluminum alloy (UNS A96061) is one of the most widely used heat-treatable aluminum alloys. Originally developed in 1935 as “Alloy 61S”, it is a precipitation-hardened grade alloyed primarily with magnesium (Mg) and silicon (Si), which form magnesium silicide (Mg₂Si) during artificial aging. This composition gives 6061 its characteristic combination of moderate-to-high strength, excellent weldability, good corrosion resistance, and outstanding machinability — making it the most common general-purpose aluminum grade in structural engineering, transportation, and precision-machined components.
6061 is the second-most widely extruded aluminum alloy after 6063, and is supplied in nearly every product form — from sheet, plate, and coil to bar, tube, wire, and complex custom profiles. It accepts both cold and hot forming, responds well to anodizing, and is approved under major international standards including ASTM B209, B210, B211, B221, ISO 6361, and EN 573-3.
Linsy supplies 6061 aluminum in the full range of standard and custom product forms. Length, width, and dimensional tolerances can be tailored to your project requirements.

Choosing the right temper depends on whether you need formability, weldability, maximum strength, or dimensional stability after machining.
| Темпер | Лучшее для | Примечания |
|---|---|---|
| 6061-O (Annealed) | Deep drawing, complex forming, cold heading | Lowest strength, maximum ductility. Softest and most formable condition. |
| 6061-T4 | Bent or formed parts that will naturally age | Moderate strength. Used for parts that need forming before final aging. |
| 6061-T6 | Structural components, general engineering, machined parts | Peak strength after artificial aging. Most common temper for finished parts. |
| 6061-T651 | Precision-machined parts with tight dimensional tolerance | Stress-relieved by stretching after solution treatment. Reduces warping during machining. |
| 6061-T6511 | Extruded bar, rod, and profile with dimensional stability | Stress-relieved extruded condition. Standard for precision-machined stock. |
| 6061-H112 | Products with strain-hardened properties from hot working | Used for plate and bar in heavy sections. Strength between O and T6. |
6061-T6 reaches tensile strength above 290 MPa at a density of 2.70 g/cm³ — roughly one-third the weight of equivalent steel sections. This strength-to-weight advantage is why 6061 dominates bicycle frames, aircraft secondary structures, automotive chassis components, and robotics.
6061 is one of the most weldable heat-treatable aluminum alloys. Standard TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) processes work well using 4043 or 5356 filler wire. Note that the weld zone softens to approximately 6061-T4 properties, with a typical strength reduction of about 40%. Designs that must retain full T6 strength across a weld should consider post-weld re-heat treatment or accept a 165 MPa design stress in the heat-affected zone.
6061 offers good atmospheric and mild-corrosion resistance, and is well-suited for marine, architectural, and outdoor applications. It is not as corrosion-resistant as 5xxx-series alloys in prolonged seawater exposure, so for highly corrosive marine environments, 5083 or 5052 may be preferred.
6061 produces excellent chip characteristics in T6 and T651 conditions and is rated “Good (A)” on the aluminum machinability scale. T651 is the preferred temper for CNC-machined parts because the stress-relief process minimizes distortion during material removal.
6061 accepts standard anodizing (Type II) and hard anodizing (Type III) treatments, although 6063 generally produces a clearer and more uniform decorative anodized finish. Linsy provides in-house anodizing, polishing, powder coating, and PVC protective film options for finished 6061 components.
6061 is the most widely specified aluminum alloy for general engineering and structural applications:
6061 is among the most processing-friendly aluminum grades, but a few specific notes will help you get the best results:
Quality control at Linsy runs from raw material selection through finished product inspection. Every order is supplied with an MTC (Material Test Certificate) issued under Linsy Aluminum after production, including chemical composition and mechanical property results for the actual lot.
For customers who require third-party verification, SGS test reports are available on request at an additional testing cost. Available SGS reports include:

For your 6061 sourcing, this means:
Use these guides to make the right 6061 decision for your application:
6061 is alloyed primarily with magnesium (0.8–1.2%) and silicon (0.4–0.8%), which combine during heat treatment to form Mg₂Si precipitates. Smaller amounts of iron, copper, chromium, zinc, manganese, and titanium provide additional grain control and strengthening effects.
Yes, 6061 is one of the most weldable heat-treatable aluminum alloys. Use 4043 or 5356 filler wire and standard TIG or MIG processes. Be aware that the weld heat-affected zone softens to approximately T4 strength — about 40% lower than the parent T6 material.
T6 is the standard solution heat-treated and artificially aged condition. T651 adds a stress-relief step (stretching the material after quenching) to reduce residual stress. For precision CNC machining where flatness and dimensional stability matter, T651 is the preferred choice.
6061 is stronger and more suited for structural and load-bearing applications, while 6063 has slightly better formability, surface finish, and anodizing response. 6063 is typically used for architectural extrusions (window frames, decorative tubing), while 6061 is used for structural and machined parts.
7075 is a much higher-strength alloy (zinc-based) with roughly 1.5× the tensile strength of 6061-T6, but it is significantly harder to weld and more expensive. 6061 is preferred when you need a balance of strength, weldability, corrosion resistance, and cost. 7075 is preferred for aerospace and high-stress structural parts.
Yes, 6061 accepts both Type II (decorative) and Type III (hard) anodizing. For premium appearance with uniform color, 6063 is often preferred because it produces a cleaner anodized finish. Linsy offers in-house anodizing for 6061 components.
Common standards include ASTM B209 (sheet/plate), B210 (drawn seamless tube), B211 (bar/rod/wire), B221 (extruded products), B308 (structural profiles), ISO 6361, and EN 573-3. EN AW-6061 (AlMg1SiCu) is the European designation, and UNS A96061 is the unified numbering.
6061 has a density of 2.70 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), identical to most other aluminum alloys. The weight advantage comes from the material’s strength, not from a different density.
