What Is 5083 Aluminum Square Tube?

5083 Aluminum Square Tube is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy (AlMg4.5Mn0.7) supplied by Linsy Aluminum. 5083 welds well with conventional processes (TIG/MIG) and retains most of its strength in the weld zone. For welding filler, ER5183 or ER5356 wire is commonly used. The alloy has only moderate machinability compared with heat-treatable grades, and cutting tools should account for its gummy chip formation.

  • Cutting: sawing, CNC machining, laser cutting
  • Forming: good in O and soft tempers; springback increases with hardening
  • Surface: mill finish standard; anodizing, polishing, powder coating, PVC film available
  • Heat input during welding should be controlled to avoid softening of adjacent material
