5083 is a 5xxx-series aluminum alloy whose principal alloying element is magnesium (about 4-4.9%), with manganese added for strength and grain control. It belongs to the group of non-heat-treatable marine-grade alloys: it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, and instead gains strength through cold working (strain-hardened H tempers).
Because of its very low tendency to corrode in salt water and its ability to keep most of its strength after welding, 5083 is one of the most widely used alloys for marine and cryogenic applications. It is supplied in tempers from soft annealed (O) to heavily strain-hardened marine grades (H116, H321).
Linsy supplies 5083 in the forms and size ranges below. Custom dimensions outside these ranges can be produced on request.

5083 is non-heat-treatable, so tempers are either annealed (O) or strain-hardened (H). Choose based on the balance of formability, strength, and corrosion performance your part needs:
5083 performs exceptionally well in marine and industrial environments. Its high magnesium content gives it strong resistance to pitting and general corrosion in seawater, making it a standard choice for hulls, superstructures, and offshore platforms.
As a non-heat-treatable alloy, 5083 retains most of its strength after welding and does not suffer from heat-affected-zone softening the way heat-treatable grades do. It is readily weldable by TIG and MIG processes; 5xxx filler wires such as 5183 or 5356 are typically used.
Among work-hardened aluminum alloys, 5083 offers one of the highest strength levels while keeping good ductility. Strain-hardened tempers (H116, H321, H32) raise yield strength without sacrificing too much formability.
5083 maintains toughness at very low temperatures and does not become brittle when cold, which is why it is widely used for LNG tanks and cryogenic pressure vessels.
Tempers such as H116 and H321 are specified for marine service because they offer improved resistance to exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking compared with general-purpose tempers.
5083 is used wherever corrosion resistance, weldability, and moderate-to-high strength are required in demanding environments:
5083 machines well and is readily weldable. A few practical notes for buyers and fabricators:
Every 5083 order from Linsy ships with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) that reports the heat number, chemical analysis, mechanical test results, and the applicable standard. Third-party inspection and SGS test reports are available on request.
Our production follows ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) management systems. Dimensional and visual inspection is carried out against ASTM, EN, or GB specifications as required by the order.
Linsy Aluminum is a Shenzhen-based aluminum manufacturer with more than 20 years of experience supplying plate, bar, tube, wire, coil, and profile across the 1000 to 8000 series.
We stock and process 5083 in the marine tempers buyers actually need (O, H111, H116, H321) and provide MTC documentation with every shipment so your project passes classification and weld-procedure requirements.
In addition to supplying mill forms, we offer CNC machining, laser cutting, sawing, and surface finishing (anodizing, polishing, mill finish, powder coating, PVC film protection) to deliver closer-to-final parts.
Typical custom lead time is 10-60 days depending on temper, size, and quantity. Small trial orders and low MOQs are supported for new projects.
No. 5083 is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy. It is strengthened only by cold working (strain-hardened H tempers) and cannot be solution-heat-treated like 6xxx or 7xxx grades.
Both are marine tempers with similar strength, but they reach that condition through different strain-hardening routes. Either is acceptable for most marine work; specify the one your design or classification society calls for.
5xxx fillers matched to the base alloy are typical, most often 5183 or 5356. The exact choice depends on joint design and the required corrosion and strength performance.
Yes. 5083 retains toughness at low temperatures and is a common material for LNG and other cryogenic tanks.
5083 has the highest magnesium (and generally strength) of the three; 5052 is softer and more formable for lighter marine parts, while 5086 sits between them. All three share excellent seawater corrosion resistance.
Typical custom lead time is 10-60 days, depending on the temper, size, and order quantity. Stock tempers can usually ship faster.
