What Is 5083 Aluminum Alloy?

5083 is a 5xxx-series aluminum alloy whose principal alloying element is magnesium (about 4-4.9%), with manganese added for strength and grain control. It belongs to the group of non-heat-treatable marine-grade alloys: it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, and instead gains strength through cold working (strain-hardened H tempers).

Because of its very low tendency to corrode in salt water and its ability to keep most of its strength after welding, 5083 is one of the most widely used alloys for marine and cryogenic applications. It is supplied in tempers from soft annealed (O) to heavily strain-hardened marine grades (H116, H321).

템퍼 선택 가이드

5083 is non-heat-treatable, so tempers are either annealed (O) or strain-hardened (H). Choose based on the balance of formability, strength, and corrosion performance your part needs:

  • O (어닐링): softest and most formable; best for deep forming and where maximum corrosion resistance is needed.
  • H111 / H112: lightly worked, slightly stronger than O while keeping good formability; common for general plate and extrusions.
  • H116 / H321: marine tempers with good strength and improved resistance to exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking; the default choice for hulls and offshore structures.
  • H32 / H34 / H38: increasingly strain-hardened for higher strength where welding is not the dominant concern.

주요 특징

Seawater and Chemical Corrosion Resistance

5083 performs exceptionally well in marine and industrial environments. Its high magnesium content gives it strong resistance to pitting and general corrosion in seawater, making it a standard choice for hulls, superstructures, and offshore platforms.

용접성

As a non-heat-treatable alloy, 5083 retains most of its strength after welding and does not suffer from heat-affected-zone softening the way heat-treatable grades do. It is readily weldable by TIG and MIG processes; 5xxx filler wires such as 5183 or 5356 are typically used.

Strength in the Non-Heat-Treatable Class

Among work-hardened aluminum alloys, 5083 offers one of the highest strength levels while keeping good ductility. Strain-hardened tempers (H116, H321, H32) raise yield strength without sacrificing too much formability.

Cryogenic Toughness

5083 maintains toughness at very low temperatures and does not become brittle when cold, which is why it is widely used for LNG tanks and cryogenic pressure vessels.

응력 부식 균열 저항

Tempers such as H116 and H321 are specified for marine service because they offer improved resistance to exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking compared with general-purpose tempers.

애플리케이션

5083 is used wherever corrosion resistance, weldability, and moderate-to-high strength are required in demanding environments:

  • Shipbuilding: hull plates, superstructures, decks, and bulkheads
  • Offshore and marine structures: platforms, risers, and fittings
  • Pressure vessels and cryogenic tanks, including LNG storage
  • Transport: tanker bodies, vehicle armor, and rail cars
  • Welded fabrications and structural components exposed to chemicals or seawater

가공 및 표면 마감 참고 사항

5083 machines well and is readily weldable. A few practical notes for buyers and fabricators:

  • 용접: TIG and MIG welding are standard. Use 5xxx filler matching the base magnesium level (commonly 5183 or 5356) to avoid sensitization.
  • 성형: O and H111 tempers form best; heavily strain-hardened tempers need larger bend radii.
  • 가공: slightly gummy compared with 6xxx alloys; sharp tooling and proper coolant help.
  • 표면 마감: available as mill finish, anodized, polished, powder coated, or with PVC film protection for plate.

5083 Aluminum FAQ

Is 5083 heat treatable?

No. 5083 is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy. It is strengthened only by cold working (strain-hardened H tempers) and cannot be solution-heat-treated like 6xxx or 7xxx grades.

What is the difference between H116 and H321?

Both are marine tempers with similar strength, but they reach that condition through different strain-hardening routes. Either is acceptable for most marine work; specify the one your design or classification society calls for.

Which filler wire should I use to weld 5083?

5xxx fillers matched to the base alloy are typical, most often 5183 or 5356. The exact choice depends on joint design and the required corrosion and strength performance.

Can 5083 be used for cryogenic service?

Yes. 5083 retains toughness at low temperatures and is a common material for LNG and other cryogenic tanks.

How does 5083 compare with 5052 or 5086?

5083 has the highest magnesium (and generally strength) of the three; 5052 is softer and more formable for lighter marine parts, while 5086 sits between them. All three share excellent seawater corrosion resistance.
