What Is 1090 Aluminum Alloy?

1090 aluminum alloy (UNS A91090, EN AW-1090) is a high-purity 1000 series aluminum grade with a minimum aluminum content of 99.90%. It is one of the purest aluminum alloys available in commercial form, offering exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity, superior corrosion resistance, and excellent ductility. Because of its high purity, 1090 is softer than most aluminum alloys and is typically supplied in annealed (O) or strain-hardened (H14, H18) tempers.

Linsy supplies 1090 aluminum in sheet, coil, bar, tube, and wire forms, with custom dimensions available. Every order ships with an MTC report, and SGS test reports are available on request. Typical lead time is 10–60 days depending on specification and quantity.

1090 Aluminum Tempers & Selection Guide

Selecting the correct temper depends on your forming requirements and final strength needs:

  • O (Annealed): Fully soft, maximum ductility and formability. Recommended for deep drawing, spinning, and applications where maximum electrical conductivity is required. Lowest strength.
  • H14 (Half Hard): Strain-hardened to approximately half the full-hard condition. A good balance of formability and moderate strength. Suitable for bent or lightly formed parts.
  • H18 (Full Hard): Maximum strength among the common 1090 tempers. Used when high yield is more important than formability. Not recommended for severe forming.

Key Characteristics of 1090 Aluminum

Exceptional Electrical & Thermal Conductivity

With a minimum purity of 99.90% Al, 1090 offers electrical conductivity of approximately 62% IACS or higher, making it one of the best conductive aluminum alloys. This also gives it excellent thermal transfer properties for heat exchanger and reflector applications.

Resistência superior à corrosão

Pure aluminum forms a dense, protective oxide layer that resists atmospheric, chemical, and saltwater corrosion. 1090 performs exceptionally well in harsh chemical environments where alloyed grades may be attacked.

High Purity & Low Outgassing

The minimal impurity content makes 1090 suitable for sensitive electronic and vacuum applications where outgassing or contamination must be minimized.

Excellent Formability (O Temper)

In the annealed condition, 1090 is extremely ductile and can be deep-drawn, spun, or bent without cracking. This makes it ideal for complex capacitor can shapes and reflective housings.

Common Applications of 1090 Aluminum

  • Electronics & Electrical: High-voltage electrolytic capacitor foils, busbars, transformer windings, and conductive pads where high purity reduces losses.
  • Chemical Processing: Protective linings for chemical storage tanks, gaskets, and laboratory equipment where contamination from alloying elements must be avoided.
  • Iluminação e óptica: High-end architectural lighting reflectors, optical enclosures, and decorative trim that can be polished to a mirror finish.
  • Transmissão de energia: Specialized electrical connectors and conductive components requiring low resistance and high purity.
  • Thermal Management: Heat sinks and thermal transfer plates where high thermal conductivity is required.

Processing & Surface Finish Notes

1090 aluminum is highly formable in O temper but has low strength compared to 2xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx, or 7xxx series alloys. Consider the following when planning processing:

  • Cutting: Standard laser cutting, waterjet, and shear cutting are suitable. Because 1090 is soft, tooling should be sharp to avoid material buildup.
  • Machining: 1090 machines poorly in O temper (gummy, long chips). H14 or H18 tempers machine better. Use sharp tools and ample coolant.
  • Welding: 1090 can be TIG or MIG welded using 1xxx series filler wire. Welded joints will have lower strength than the base material. For electrical applications, consider resistance welding to avoid contamination.
  • Anodizing: 1090 anodizes to a clear, transparent oxide layer. Because of the high purity, the anodized finish appears colorless and may show slight variation. For decorative mirror finishes, polishing before anodizing gives the best result.
  • Surface finish: 1090 can be polished to a high reflectivity (up to ~85% reflectance) and is often used in lighting reflectors for this reason.

Quality Documents & Inspection

Linsy provides the following quality documentation with every 1090 aluminum order:

  • MTC (Mill Test Certificate): Included with every shipment, reporting actual chemical analysis and mechanical test results for the supplied batch.
  • SGS test reports: Available on request for third-party verification of composition or properties.
  • Dimension inspection report: Upon request, detailing actual vs. nominal dimensions.
  • RoHS / REACH compliance: Declaration available on request.

Linsy is certified under ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety).

1090 Aluminum FAQ

Q: What is the difference between 1090 and 1060 / 1070 / 1100 aluminum?
A: 1090 has the highest minimum purity (99.90% Al) among these grades. 1100 is the most common commercial pure aluminum (99.0% min Al) and is less expensive. Choose 1090 when electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, or purity are critical.

Q: Can 1090 aluminum be used for welded assemblies?
A: Yes. 1090 can be welded using 1xxx series filler. Note that the weld zone will not match the base material’s high purity, which may affect corrosion performance in aggressive chemical environments.

Q: What surface finish is available for lighting reflector applications?
A: 1090 sheet can be supplied with a mill finish, bright finish, or pre-polished. For maximum reflectivity, specify bright-rolled or polished sheet. Anodizing after polishing can protect the reflective surface.

Q: Is 1090 available in extruded profiles?
A: 1090 has very low strength and is rarely extruded. Most 1090 products are rolled (sheet/coil/plate) or drawn (wire/tube). If you require a specific profile, contact our engineering team to evaluate feasibility.

Q: What is the typical lead time for 1090 aluminum orders?
A: Standard sizes are typically available in 10–60 days. Custom dimensions or tempers may require additional production time. Your sales contact will confirm the schedule when you request a quote.

General Ordering FAQ

Q: What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
A: MOQ varies by product form and specification. For standard sheet and coil, MOQ typically starts from 500 kg. Contact us with your requirement for a specific quote.

Q: Does Linsy provide samples before bulk order?
A: Yes, sample pieces can be arranged for evaluation. Sample cost and shipping are typically borne by the buyer unless otherwise agreed.

Q: What payment terms are available?
A: Linsy accepts T/T, L/C, and other standard international payment methods. Payment terms can be discussed based on order size and customer profile.

Q: Can Linsy cut to size?
A: Yes, Linsy offers cut-to-length, slitting, and CNC cutting services. Specify your required dimensions when requesting a quotation.
