2017 (AlCu4MgSi) is a heat-treatable 2xxx-series aluminum alloy valued for its high strength, good machinability, and moderate corrosion resistance. As the US equivalent of the Chinese 2A11 standard, 2017 is widely specified for rivets, fasteners, and structural components in aerospace and general engineering — especially where formability in the O temper and strength after T4 heat treatment are both required.

2017 aluminum alloy (UNS A92017, EN AW-2017) is a copper-based, heat-treatable alloy in the 2xxx series. Its nominal composition — approximately 3.5–4.5% Cu, 0.4–1.0% Mn, 0.4–0.8% Mg, and 0.2–0.8% Si — gives it a combination of strength and machinability that makes it a practical choice for forged and machined structural parts.
In the annealed (O) condition, 2017 exhibits good ductility for cold-forming operations such as riveting. After solution heat treatment and natural aging (T4), it develops tensile strength up to approximately 390 MPa — comparable to many higher-strength aerospace alloys, though with somewhat lower corrosion resistance than 2xxx alloys containing higher magnesium.
2017 is the direct US equivalent of the Chinese 2A11 (GB/T 3190) and Russian D1 alloy designations. It is sometimes referred to as AlCu4MgSi under the ISO designation system.
Linsy Aluminum supplies 2017 alloy across a range of product forms and tempers. All products can be cut to custom dimensions; typical lead times for custom sizes are 10–60 days.

Choosing the right temper for 2017 depends on the balance between formability and strength your application demands:
Observação: 2017 is not recommended for welding. If weldability is a priority, consider 5052 or 6061 as alternatives.
With Cu as the primary alloying element (~4%), 2017 achieves high strength in the T4 temper (UTS ~390 MPa) while maintaining good machinability. It machines readily with standard CNC tooling and produces clean chips — a practical advantage over softer alloys in high-volume machining runs.
2017 has moderate corrosion resistance — adequate for many indoor and protected structural applications, but less suitable than 5xxx or 6xxx alloys for prolonged exposure to marine or industrial atmospheres. Where corrosion is a concern, consider protective surface treatments (anodizing, painting) or switching to a 5xxx-series alloy.
In the O temper, 2017 offers good cold formability — it can be bent, headed, and riveted with standard tooling. After heat treatment (T3/T4), formability drops significantly; most forming should be completed before solution treatment.
2017 is not recommended for arc welding. The high copper content promotes hot cracking and reduces weld joint strength. Resistance welding (spot, seam) is possible with appropriate parameters. If welding is required, 5052, 5083, or 6061 are better choices.
2017 aluminum alloy is specified in industries that demand high strength from a machinable, heat-treatable material:

Both are 2xxx-series Cu-based alloys, but 2024 contains higher Mg (~1.5%) and achieves higher strength (~470 MPa UTS in T4). 2017 has slightly lower strength but better formability in the O temper, making it preferred for rivets and cold-headed fasteners.
2017 is not recommended for arc welding due to hot-cracking susceptibility from its high Cu content. Resistance welding (spot/seam) may be used with controlled parameters. For weldable alternatives in similar strength ranges, consider 6061-T6 or 5083.
T351 is recommended for precision-machined plate and bar — the stress-relief stretch after quenching provides dimensional stability during machining. T4 is acceptable when dimensional tolerance requirements are less stringent.
Yes. 2017 (AA/UNS designation) and 2A11 (Chinese GB/T 3190 designation) are equivalent alloys with the same nominal composition. The Russian equivalent is D1.
Mill finish, polished, anodized (darker tone than 6xxx alloys), and powder-coated. Anodizing quality is acceptable but not as bright as 6061 or 6063.
