5456 aluminum is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy with a high magnesium content, making it one of the strongest work-hardenable aluminum grades. It is known for high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good weldability, and is used in marine and structural applications where strength and durability in harsh environments are critical.

5456 is a high-magnesium (about 5 percent) non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy and one of the strongest of the work-hardenable grades. It combines high strength with excellent corrosion resistance in marine and aggressive environments, and is used where 5083 is not quite strong enough.
Linsy supplies 5456 in plate, sheet, bar, tube, and extruded profiles. The tempers most commonly supplied are O, H111, H112, H116, and H321. Dimensions below are typical ranges; other sizes can be discussed on request.
5456 sheet and coil are supplied in thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 12 mm, widths up to 2600 mm, and lengths up to 6000 mm or cut to size.
5456 plate is available from 6 mm up to 120 mm thick, with standard widths up to 3000 mm, commonly in H321 or H116.
Round, flat, and square bars are produced in diameters or side lengths from 6 mm to 300 mm, typically in H111, H112, or O.
5456 tube and pipe are supplied in outer diameters from 6 mm to 400 mm with wall thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 40 mm, in H116 or H321 for marine service.
Extruded angles, channels, and custom profiles are available on request, normally in H111 or H112 temper.
5456 is identified by the following common standards and designations.
| Padrão | Designação |
|---|---|
| AA | 5456 |
| UNS | A95456 |
| EN AW | EN AW-AlMg5 |
The typical composition of 5456 aluminum is listed below in weight percent, with aluminum as the balance.
| Elemento | Composição (%) |
|---|---|
| Silício (Si) | 0,25 máximo |
| Ferro (Fe) | 0.40 max |
| Cobre (Cu) | 0,10 máximo |
| Manganês (Mn) | 0.50 – 1.00 |
| Magnésio (Mg) | 4.7 – 5.5 |
| Cromo (Cr) | 0.05 – 0.20 |
| Zinco (Zn) | 0,25 máximo |
| Titânio (Ti) | 0.20 max |
| Others each | 0.05 |
| Others total | 0.15 |
| Alumínio (Al) | Equilíbrio |
The values below are typical for rolled and extruded products and should be confirmed against the mill test certificate for the specific temper and thickness ordered.
| Temperamento | Resistência à tração (MPa) | Resistência ao escoamento (MPa) | Alongamento (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 310 – 340 | 145 min | 18 |
| H111 | 310 min | 180 min | 14 |
| H112 | 310 min | 180 min | 12 |
| H116 | 310 min | 230 min | 12 |
| H321 | 310 min | 230 min | 12 |
Specify H116 or H321 for marine, armor, and structural parts exposed to corrosion. H111 and H112 are used for structural and welded components, while O is chosen for heavy forming.
Among work-hardenable alloys, 5456 ranks near the top for as-fabricated strength.
It performs well in seawater and chemical environments and resists exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking better than many alternatives.
It welds with MIG/TIG using compatible 5xxx fillers, though care is needed to avoid sensitization in thick sections.
Formability is moderate; heavily strain-hardened tempers are less formable than O or H111.
5456 is welded with MIG and TIG using matching or compatible 5xxx fillers. It machines and cuts acceptably and is supplied sawn or laser-cut to size. As a 5xxx alloy it anodizes to a darker gray rather than a bright finish, so anodizing is uncommon.
Linsy provides a mill test certificate (MTC) with every shipment, documenting chemical composition and mechanical properties per EN 10204 3.1 where applicable. Third-party inspection and SGS material test reports can be arranged on request. Production is managed under ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) systems.
Linsy Aluminum operates a production and processing base with over 20 years of experience across the 1xxx to 8xxx aluminum series. For 5456, we supply sheet, plate, bar, tube, and extruded profiles with optional CNC machining, laser cutting, and surface finishing such as anodizing and polishing. Every order is shipped with a mill test certificate (MTC), and production follows ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems. Custom dimensions and tempers can be arranged, with typical lead times of 10 to 60 days depending on the specification.
5456 is stronger than both; 5454 is the lightest-duty of the three and 5083 sits in between, with 5456 chosen when maximum strength is required.
No. It is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy strengthened by strain hardening.
It can be anodized but yields a darker gray finish, so it is not used for bright decorative trim.
H116 and H321 are standard for plates and structural members in marine service.
MOQs depend on form and temper. Standard stock items often start from a few hundred kilograms, while custom sizes are quoted per inquiry.
Standard specifications are usually available within 10 to 60 days. Custom tempers or dimensions may require longer; we confirm a date with each quotation.
A mill test certificate (MTC) is included with every order. Production carries ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 system certifications, and SGS or third-party test reports can be supplied on request.
