5383 aluminum is a high-strength, non-heat-treatable Mg-Mn alloy developed as an improved alternative to 5083, offering higher weld-joint strength and good resistance to exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking. Supplied mainly in H116 and H321 tempers, it is engineered for demanding marine, shipbuilding, and transport structures where payload and structural integrity are critical.

5383 is a non-heat-treatable wrought aluminum alloy in the 5xxx (Al-Mg) family, formulated with roughly 4.5 to 5 percent magnesium plus manganese. It was developed as a higher-strength successor to 5083, delivering improved weld-joint strength and better resistance to exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking. Because it is strain-hardened rather than heat-treated, its properties come from cold work in the H tempers.
Linsy supplies 5383 in the forms most used for marine and transport structures. The tempers most commonly supplied are O, H111, H112, H116, and H321. Dimensions below are typical ranges; other sizes can be discussed on request.
5383 sheet and coil are supplied in thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 12 mm, widths up to 2600 mm, and lengths up to 6000 mm or cut to size. H116 and H321 are the standard shipbuilding tempers.
5383 plate is available from 6 mm up to 120 mm thick, with standard widths up to 3000 mm. Thick plate is typically ordered in H321 or H116 for hull and deck structures.
Round, flat, and square bars are produced in diameters or side lengths from 6 mm to 300 mm, commonly in H111, H112, or O temper.
5383 seamless and welded tube can be supplied in outer diameters from 6 mm to 400 mm with wall thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 40 mm. Marine and pressure-service tempers are H116 or H321.
Extruded angles, channels, and custom profiles are available on request, normally in H111 or H112 temper.
5383 is identified by the following common standards and designations.

Choose H116 or H321 for welded marine structures where corrosion resistance and strength after welding matter most. O and H111 suit general fabrication and forming, while H112 is used for extruded and less-critical structural parts.
5383 was designed so welded joints retain more strength than those made with 5083, an important advantage for hull and tank fabrication.
It resists seawater, exfoliation, and stress corrosion cracking well, which is why it is favored in shipbuilding.
As a high-magnesium 5xxx grade it is stronger than 5083 in the same temper, while remaining workable.
In O and H111 tempers it forms and bends reasonably well; highly strain-hardened tempers are less formable.
5383 welds well with MIG and TIG processes using matching or compatible 5xxx fillers; post-weld heat treatment is not used because the alloy is not heat-treatable. It can be cut, drilled, and CNC machined, and is supplied laser-cut or sawn to size. Note that 5xxx alloys anodize to a darker gray tone rather than a bright finish, so anodizing is rarely specified for 5383.
Linsy provides a mill test certificate (MTC) with every shipment, documenting chemical composition and mechanical properties per EN 10204 3.1 where applicable. Third-party inspection and SGS material test reports can be arranged on request. Production is managed under ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) systems.
Linsy Aluminum operates a production and processing base with over 20 years of experience across the 1xxx to 8xxx aluminum series. For 5383, we supply sheet, plate, bar, tube, and extruded profiles with optional CNC machining, laser cutting, and surface finishing such as anodizing and polishing. Every order is shipped with a mill test certificate (MTC), and production follows ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems. Custom dimensions and tempers can be arranged, with typical lead times of 10 to 60 days depending on the specification.
5383 has a slightly higher magnesium content and is formulated so welded joints are stronger, while corrosion resistance is comparable. It is often chosen when weld efficiency is critical.
No. It is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy; its strength comes from strain hardening in the H tempers.
H116 and H321 are the standard marine tempers for plate and sheet in shipbuilding.
It can, but it produces a darker gray finish than the bright trim grades such as 5457 or 5657, so anodizing is uncommon for this alloy.
MOQs depend on form and temper. Standard stock items often start from a few hundred kilograms, while custom sizes are quoted per inquiry.
Standard specifications are usually available within 10 to 60 days. Custom tempers or dimensions may require longer; we confirm a date with each quotation.
A mill test certificate (MTC) is included with every order. Production carries ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 system certifications, and SGS or third-party test reports can be supplied on request.
