1370 aluminiumlegering

1370 aluminum alloy (Al99.7) is a high-purity wrought aluminum alloy containing a minimum of 99.7% aluminum, classified within the 1000 series. Primarily used as electrical conductor grade (EC) aluminum, 1370 delivers approximately 61% IACS electrical conductivity, excellent thermal conductivity, and strong corrosion resistance. As a non-heat-treatable alloy, it derives its mechanical properties from strain hardening. Linsy supplies 1370 aluminum wire, rod, bar, sheet, and coil in tempers O, H12, H14, H18, H111, and H112, with custom diameters, coil weights, and MTC reports available for every order.

What Is 1370 Aluminum Alloy?

1370 aluminum (UNS A91370) is a high-purity wrought aluminum alloy in the 1000 series, designated as Al99.7 by EN standards. With a minimum aluminum content of 99.7%, it is one of the highest-purity commercial aluminum grades used as electrical conductor (EC) material. The alloy is non-heat-treatable and gains strength through work hardening (strain hardening), primarily in H tempers. Its defining feature is electrical conductivity — approximately 61% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard) in annealed condition — making it the material of choice for a wide range of electrical transmission and power distribution applications where high conductivity, light weight, and corrosion resistance are required.

1370 is manufactured under international standards including ASTM B233 (aluminum 1350/1370 wire for electrical purposes), ASTM B230 (aluminum EC-H19 wire), EN AW-1370, and EN 573-3. It is closely related to 1350 aluminum (Al99.5) but offers slightly higher purity and marginally better conductivity, particularly in applications where minimal trace-impurity resistance is critical.

Key Characteristics of 1370 Aluminum

Hoge elektrische geleidbaarheid

1370 delivers approximately 61% IACS electrical conductivity (minimum 61.0% for EC grade), making it the preferred material for electrical transmission conductors, transformer windings, and power distribution cables. Compared to copper, aluminum conductors weigh about one-third for equivalent current-carrying capacity, reducing support structure and installation costs.

High Aluminum Purity (99.7% Minimum)

With a minimum aluminum content of 99.7%, 1370 has lower impurity levels than standard 1050 or 1100 aluminum grades. This high purity directly contributes to the alloy’s superior conductivity and corrosion resistance, as trace elements like iron and silicon increase electrical resistivity.

Uitstekende corrosiebestendigheid

As a high-purity 1000 series aluminum, 1370 forms a protective aluminum oxide layer that provides strong resistance to atmospheric corrosion. It performs well in most outdoor and industrial environments without additional coating, making it suitable for bare overhead power line applications.

Good Formability & Non-Heat-Treatable

1370 is non-heat-treatable and gains strength only through cold working (strain hardening). It offers excellent cold formability in annealed (O) temper, making it ideal for wire drawing, rod drawing, and cold heading operations. Mechanical properties can be adjusted through controlled strain hardening and partial annealing to meet specific electrical conductor requirements.

Common Applications of 1370 Aluminum

Industrie Application Why 1370 Is Used

Processing & Conductivity Notes

1370 is a non-heat-treatable alloy — its mechanical strength is developed entirely through cold working (strain hardening). For wire drawing and rod production, the alloy is typically supplied in annealed (O) temper as feedstock and hardened through controlled draws to the target final size and temper. Key processing considerations:

  • Annealing: Strain-hardened 1370 can be softened back to O temper when required. Annealing temperature is typically 340–400°C, followed by controlled cooling. Care should be taken to avoid grain growth that can affect surface finish.
  • Wire Drawing: 1370 draws smoothly through progressive dies from rod stock. Intermediate annealing may be needed to restore ductility between heavy reductions, depending on the target final diameter and temper.
  • Conductivity: Electrical conductivity decreases as strain hardening increases. The highest IACS values are obtained in fully annealed (O) temper. For critical conductivity applications, specify the O temper and verify via MTC.
  • Surface Finish: Standard mill finish is available. Polished or bright-surface finish can be arranged for specific electrical contact or terminal applications.

Kwaliteitsdocumenten en inspectie

Every 1370 aluminum shipment from Linsy includes a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) issued after production. The MTC documents the following for your batch:

  • Chemical composition analysis (all elements)
  • Mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation)
  • Electrical conductivity test results (IACS %)
  • Dimensional inspection
  • Heat/batch number for full traceability

For projects requiring third-party verification, SGS test reports (chemical composition, mechanical properties, conductivity, dimensional inspection, RoHS + REACH) are available on request with additional testing cost. Linsy operates under ISO 9001 quality management, ISO 14001 environmental management, and ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management systems.

1370 Aluminum FAQ

What is 1370 aluminum used for?

1370 aluminum is primarily used as electrical conductor (EC) grade material for overhead power transmission lines, transformer windings, motor windings, cable conductors, and electrical-grade fasteners and connectors. Its 61% IACS conductivity and high purity make it the material of choice for applications where aluminum serves as current-carrying conductor.

How conductive is 1370 aluminum compared to copper?

1370 aluminum achieves approximately 61% IACS conductivity, meaning it carries about 61% of the current that an equivalent cross-section of copper would carry. However, aluminum is about one-third the weight of copper, so for the same weight, aluminum actually carries more current. At equal conductivity, an aluminum conductor weighs approximately 48% less than copper.

What is the difference between 1370 and 1350 aluminum?

1370 (Al99.7) contains a minimum of 99.7% aluminum, compared to 1350 (Al99.5) at 99.5% minimum. Both are EC (electrical conductor) grades with similar IACS conductivity ratings (~61%). 1370 offers slightly higher purity and may be specified where lower trace-element resistivity is critical. Both are supplied in wire, rod, and bar forms.

Can 1370 aluminum be heat treated?

No. 1370 belongs to the 1000 series of non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys. It gains mechanical strength solely through strain hardening (cold working). Mechanical properties can be modified by controlling the degree of cold work and by annealing (softening) when required.

What tempers are available for 1370 aluminum?

Linsy supplies 1370 in O (annealed), H12 (quarter-hard), H14 (half-hard), H18 (full-hard), and H111 (annealed & slightly strain-hardened) tempers. The most common tempers for electrical conductor applications are O for wire drawing feedstock and H14/H18 for finished conductor wire and rod.

Do you supply 1370 aluminum in custom sizes?

Yes. Linsy supports custom diameters, coil weights, and cut lengths for 1370 wire, rod, and bar products. Standard stock spans diameters from 0.8 mm (wire) to 300 mm (bar), and we can produce custom dimensions outside these ranges for qualifying order quantities.

Is MTC available for 1370 aluminum orders?

Yes. Every 1370 aluminum shipment from Linsy includes a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) documenting chemical composition, mechanical properties, and IACS conductivity for your specific batch, with full traceability to heat/batch number.

What is the typical lead time for 1370 aluminum?

For standard stock sizes, orders can ship within 3–15 days. Custom sizes and non-stock specifications typically require 10–60 days, depending on the alloy, dimensions, processing requirements, and order quantity. Contact Linsy with your specifications for a project-specific lead time estimate.
