5082 Aluminium-Legierung

5082 aluminum (AlMg4.5) is a medium-strength, non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy with strong resistance to seawater and industrial atmospheres. Its balanced magnesium content gives good weldability and formability without the stress-corrosion risk of higher-Mg grades, making it a workhorse for shipbuilding, vehicle bodies, and welded structures. Linsy supplies 5082 sheet, plate, bar, and tube in O, H111, H112, and H3x tempers.

What Is 5082 Aluminum?

5082 aluminum, also written AlMg4.5, is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx-series alloy containing about 4.0-5.0% magnesium. It sits between the softer 5052 and the stronger marine grades such as 5083 and 5059. The moderate magnesium level gives 5082 good strength, excellent weldability, and reliable corrosion resistance in marine and industrial environments, while keeping the risk of sensitization low.

Because it is strain-hardenable rather than heat-treatable, 5082 is supplied in O, H111, H112, and the H3x strain-hardened tempers. It is a common choice for ship superstructures, vehicle bodies, pressure equipment, and architectural paneling.

Leitfaden zur Auswahl der Härtung

  • O / H111 – Soft and formable; best for deep drawing, bending, and complex fabricated parts.
  • H112 – As-fabricated temper for plate where moderate strength and flatness are needed.
  • H32 / H34 – Balanced strength and formability for panels, bodies, and welded assemblies.
  • H38 – Highest strength among common 5082 tempers; use where stiffness matters and forming is minimal.

Wesentliche Merkmale

Seawater & Chemical Corrosion Resistance

5082 resists corrosion in seawater and many industrial atmospheres, and its moderate magnesium content keeps sensitization risk low even after welding.

Gute Schweißeignung

5082 welds readily with MIG and TIG. Matching or 5xxx filler (e.g. 5356, 5183) preserves corrosion resistance in the weld zone.

Balanced Strength & Formability

The H3x tempers provide useful strength while remaining formable enough for vehicle bodies and panels.

Leistung bei niedrigen Temperaturen

Like other 5xxx alloys, 5082 retains toughness at low temperatures, supporting cryogenic and marine use.

Anwendungen

  • Ship and boat superstructures, decks, and hull fittings
  • Vehicle bodies, trailers, and transport frames
  • Welded pressure vessels and storage tanks
  • Architectural paneling and cladding
  • General welded structures and fabricated parts

Hinweise zur Bearbeitung und Oberflächenveredelung

  • Zerspanung: 5082 machines well with standard aluminum tooling; use coolant to avoid built-up edge.
  • Schweißen: MIG/TIG with 5xxx filler; preheat is rarely required for thin sections.
  • Formung: O and H111 tempers form easily; verify bend radius for H3x tempers.
  • Oberflächengüte: Mill finish, brushed, anodized (even grey tone), powder coated, or PVC-film protected.

Qualitätsdokumente und Qualitätsprüfung

Every 5082 order ships with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) covering chemical composition and mechanical properties. Third-party inspection and SGS test reports are available on request. Linsy’s production is managed under ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 systems.

5082 Aluminum FAQ

Is 5082 heat-treatable?

No. 5082 is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx alloy strengthened by strain hardening (the H tempers). It cannot be solution heat treated like 6xxx or 7xxx alloys.

How does 5082 compare to 5083?

5083 has higher magnesium (4.0-4.9% vs 4.0-5.0% nominal but typically stronger) and is the stronger marine grade. 5082 offers slightly lower strength with very good corrosion resistance and formability at lower cost for less critical structures.

Can 5082 be anodized?

Yes, though 5xxx alloys anodise to a grey tone. For a consistent decorative finish, powder coating is often preferred.

What filler should I use to weld 5082?

Use a 5xxx filler such as 5356 or 5183 matched to the service environment.
