What Is 5052 Aluminum Alloy?

5052 is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy in the 5xxx series, containing approximately 2.2–2.8% magnesium as its primary strengthening element. The magnesium content provides solid-solution strengthening, giving 5052 higher strength than alloys such as 3003 and 5050 without the need for heat treatment.

Its standout property is ausgezeichnete Korrosionsbeständigkeit, especially in marine and saltwater environments, which makes 5052 one of the most widely used alloys for boat hulls, fuel tanks, and other structures exposed to moisture. It also offers good weldability across all standard methods (TIG, MIG, resistance) and retains most of its strength in welded zones.

5052 cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. Its strength increases through strain hardening (cold working), which produces the H-series tempers (H32, H34, H38, etc.). The annealed condition (O temper) provides maximum formability at lower strength.

H38 260–310 ≥205 2–4

For comparison, the elastic modulus of 5052 aluminum is approximately 69.3 GPa across all tempers. Fatigue strength at 500 million cycles is roughly 110–140 MPa, depending on temper.

Leitfaden zur Auswahl der Härtung

Choosing the right temper depends on your forming requirements versus the strength you need:

  • O (geglüht) — Maximum formability, lowest strength. Use for deep draws, complex bends, and applications where forming is the priority.
  • H32 (1/4 Hard) — The most commonly stocked temper. Good balance of strength and formability. Suitable for marine panels, general sheet metal work, and moderate bending.
  • H34 (1/2 Hard) — Higher strength with reduced formability. Use when structural load-bearing is important and bending radius is generous.
  • H38 (Full Hard) — Maximum strain-hardened strength, minimal formability. Reserved for flat or lightly formed applications that demand the highest tensile and yield values.

If your application involves significant cold forming, start with O temper and specify the final temper only if post-forming strain hardening or partial annealing is planned.

Wesentliche Merkmale

Korrosionsbeständigkeit

5052 exhibits excellent resistance to saltwater, industrial atmospheres, and many chemicals. This is its primary advantage over 3xxx-series alloys. In marine environments, 5052 forms a stable oxide film that resists pitting and general corrosion. It is one of the most cost-effective marine-grade alloys, often compared with 5083 (higher Mg, higher strength, higher cost).

Schweißeignung

5052 welds readily using TIG, MIG, resistance, and gas methods. It does not suffer from hot cracking or significant strength loss in the weld zone. Welded joint efficiency typically exceeds 80% of base-metal strength for O and H32 tempers. No pre- or post-weld heat treatment is required.

Verformbarkeit

In the O temper, 5052 offers very good formability — suitable for deep drawing, spinning, and complex stamping. As temper increases (H32 → H34 → H38), formability decreases and minimum bend radii increase. H32 can still handle moderate bends; H34 and H38 require larger bend radii.

Non-Heat-Treatable Nature

5052 cannot be strengthened by solution heat treatment and artificial aging. All strength above the annealed level comes from cold working (strain hardening). This means H-series tempers will partially soften if exposed to moderate heating (above ~150°C) during processing — a factor to consider when planning post-forming welding or heat-based surface treatments.

Anwendungen

5052 aluminum is used across industries where corrosion resistance and moderate-to-high strength are required without heat treatment:

  • Marine: boat hulls, decks, cabin structures, railings, fuel and water tanks
  • Transportation: truck and trailer body panels, vehicle flooring, railcar interiors
  • Pressure vessels and tanks (non-code and ASME-coded with proper qualification)
  • Architecture: signage, fascia panels, decorative sheet work
  • Electrical: enclosures, conduit, cable shielding
  • General engineering: welded frames, brackets, fencing, furniture

For applications that require higher strength in a marine environment, consider 5083 Aluminium (higher Mg content, higher tensile strength). For general structural work where corrosion is less critical, 6061-T6 offers higher strength via heat treatment.

Hinweise zur Bearbeitung und Oberflächenveredelung

Linsy Aluminum provides the following processing and surface finish options for 5052 products:

  • CNC-Bearbeitung: 5052 machines well in H32 and harder tempers. O temper can be gummy — prefer H32 for machined parts.
  • Laserschneiden: Available for sheet and plate. 5052 cuts cleanly; edge quality is consistent.
  • TIG & MIG welding: 5052 is highly weldable. Use 5356 or 5556 filler wire for best color match and joint strength.
  • Bending & forming: O temper for tight radii and deep draws; H32 for moderate bends. H34/H38 require larger radii.
  • Eloxieren: 5052 anodizes well. The Mg content can produce a slightly yellowish tint in clear anodize — specify color requirements in advance.
  • Pulverbeschichtung: Suitable for architectural and decorative applications. Proper pretreatment (chromate or zirconium conversion) is recommended for long-term adhesion.
  • Polieren: Achievable on sheet and plate; mirror finish requires multi-stage polishing.
  • Mill finish & PVC film: Standard as-supplied condition. PVC film protects surface during transport and handling.

Caution: H32 and H34 tempers will partially anneal if heated above approximately 150°C during processing. If post-welding or post-forming strength must be maintained, discuss temper recovery options with our engineering team.

5052 Aluminum FAQ

Is 5052 stronger than 6061?

6061-T6 has higher ultimate tensile strength (~310 MPa) and yield strength (~275 MPa) than 5052-H32 (~260 MPa / ~130 MPa). However, 5052-H32 retains more strength after welding, while 6061-T6 loses significant strength in the heat-affected zone. For welded marine structures, 5052 often outperforms 6061 in practice.

Can 5052 be heat treated?

No. 5052 is a non-heat-treatable alloy. Its strength comes from magnesium in solid solution and cold working (strain hardening). It cannot be solution heat treated and aged like 6xxx or 7xxx alloys.

What is the difference between 5052-H32 and 5052-H34?

H32 is 1/4-hard (stabilized), offering a balance of strength and formability. H34 is 1/2-hard (stabilized), providing higher yield and tensile strength but reduced bend capability. For moderate forming, H32 is preferred; for flat structural panels where bending is minimal, H34 may be chosen.

Is 5052 suitable for marine applications?

Yes. 5052 is one of the most widely used marine-grade aluminum alloys, offering excellent saltwater corrosion resistance, good weldability, and adequate strength for hulls, decks, tanks, and railings. For higher-strength marine applications, 5083 is the next step up.

What filler wire should I use when welding 5052?

Use 5356 or 5556 filler wire for welding 5052. These match the Mg content of the base metal and provide good color match after anodizing. 4043 filler is acceptable for non-anodized structural welds but will produce a visible color difference if anodized.
