What Is 5019 Aluminum Alloy?

5019 aluminum alloy (EN AW-5019, UNS A95019) is a non-heat-treatable 5000 series aluminum-magnesium alloy, with magnesium as the primary alloying element at 4.5–5.6%. Also known as AlMg5, this alloy is classified as a medium-strength marine-grade aluminum that offers an excellent combination of corrosion resistance, weldability, and formability. Unlike 6000 and 7000 series alloys, 5019 is strengthened by strain hardening (H tempers) rather than heat treatment, which makes it particularly well suited for welded structures that must retain their strength after welding.

5019 is widely specified in marine, transport, and architectural applications where exposure to seawater, industrial atmospheres, or moisture is a concern. It is approved for food contact and is commonly used in tanks, pressure vessels, and piping systems. The alloy is supplied in tempers O, H111, H112, H116, H321, H32, H34, and H36, covering the full range from fully annealed to strain-hardened conditions.

Key Characteristics of 5019 Aluminum

Korrosionsbeständigkeit

5019 offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, seawater, and industrial chemicals. The H116 and H321 tempers are specifically stabilized to resist exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking in marine environments. This makes 5019 a preferred choice for shipbuilding, offshore platforms, and coastal architectural applications.

Umformbarkeit und Schweißbarkeit

5019 retains good formability in O and H111 tempers, allowing complex shaping and bending without cracking. The alloy has very good weldability using TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) processes; welded joints retain a high percentage of the parent material’s strength, and post-weld heat treatment is not required. Note that strain-hardened tempers (H32/H34/H36) will soften in the heat-affected zone after welding.

Hinweise zur Bearbeitung und Oberflächenveredelung

Linsy supports a range of downstream processing services for 5019 aluminum products:

  • CNC Machining: 5019 machines well in O and H111 tempers. Strain-hardened tempers (H32/H34/H36) machine to a finer finish but with increased tool wear.
  • Welding: Excellent weldability with TIG and MIG. No post-weld heat treatment required. For maximum corrosion resistance in welded assemblies, consider using H116/H321 tempers.
  • Laser Cutting: Clean cuts achievable on sheet and plate. Minimal heat-affected zone; edge preparation for welding is typically straightforward.
  • Formung: O and H111 tempers accept bending and drawing without cracking. Minimum bend radius depends on temper and thickness; consult Linsy technical support for critical forming applications.
  • Surface Finishing: 5019 accepts anodizing, polishing, and mill finish. For architectural applications, PVC protective film and custom coating options are available on request.

Qualitätsdokumente und Qualitätsprüfung

Linsy provides the following quality documents with every 5019 aluminum order:

  • MTC Report: Material Test Certificate issued by Linsy Aluminum, included with every order at no additional cost.
  • SGS Test Reports: Available on request (additional testing cost applies) — chemical composition, mechanical properties, ultrasonic testing for thick plates, RoHS + REACH compliance.
  • Dimension Inspection Report: Full dimensional verification available on request.

All 5019 aluminum products are supplied under Linsy’s ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certified quality management system.

5019 Aluminum FAQ

  1. What is 5019 aluminum alloy used for?
5019 is primarily used in marine, transport, and industrial applications where corrosion resistance and weldability are required. Typical uses include ship hull plates, bus bodies, pressure vessels, storage tanks, and architectural cladding.
  2. Is 5019 aluminum suitable for seawater exposure?
Yes. 5019 offers excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, particularly in H116 and H321 tempers which are stabilized against exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking.
  3. What tempers are available for 5019 aluminum?
    Linsy supplies 5019 in O, H111, H112, H116, H321, H32, H34, and H36 tempers. Select O/H111 for maximum formability, H116/H321 for marine use, and H32–H36 for higher strength.
  4. Can 5019 aluminum be welded?
Yes. 5019 has very good weldability using TIG and MIG processes. Post-weld heat treatment is not required. Note that strain-hardened tempers will soften in the heat-affected zone.
  5. What is the difference between 5019 and 5083 aluminum?
Both are 5000 series Al-Mg alloys for marine use. 5083 (AlMg4.5Mn) has higher strength and is more common for heavy marine plate; 5019 (AlMg5) has slightly higher magnesium content and is often preferred for formed sheet applications and food-contact equipment.
  6. Does Linsy provide MTC reports for 5019 aluminum?
Yes. A Material Test Certificate is issued with every order at no additional cost, documenting chemical composition and mechanical properties.
  7. Can 5019 aluminum be anodized?
Yes, but the anodized layer on 5000 series alloys is typically less decorative than on 6000 series alloys. For architectural appearance, discuss expectations with Linsy before specifying.
  8. What lead time can I expect for custom 5019 aluminum?
Typical custom lead time is 10–60 days, depending on alloy, dimensions, processing requirements, and order complexity. Stock items are available for faster shipment.
