2117 aluminum is a copper-based 2xxx series alloy best known as the standard rivet alloy in aerospace construction. Its combination of moderate strength, excellent ductility, and reliable shear performance makes it the preferred choice for structural rivets and fasteners. Linsy supplies 2117 in bar, wire, sheet, and tube — all backed by mill test certificates.

2117 aluminum (also designated EN AW-2117 / UNS A92117) is a low-copper 2xxx series alloy containing approximately 2.2–3.0% copper with small additions of silicon, magnesium, and manganese. It is specifically developed for rivet and fastener applications where a balance of strength and ductility is essential.
2117 is the standard alloy for solid rivets in aircraft construction — it provides adequate shear strength while maintaining enough ductility for cold heading and rivet driving without cracking. It is also used for general-purpose fasteners, cotter pins, and cold-formed hardware.
In the T4 temper (solution heat-treated and naturally aged), 2117 achieves its best combination of shear strength and ductility. This makes it the default rivet material in most aerospace specifications.
Round bar and rivet wire are the primary forms of 2117 alloy. Available in T4 temper for optimal riveting performance.

T4 (solution heat-treated and naturally aged) is the default temper for 2117 rivet wire and bar. It provides the optimal balance of shear strength and ductility for cold-heading and rivet-driving operations. Most aerospace rivet specifications require 2117-T4.
T42 is 2117 that has been solution heat-treated and naturally aged to meet specific mechanical property ranges negotiated between purchaser and supplier. Used when tighter control of shear or tensile values is required.
T3 provides higher ductility with slightly lower strength — suitable for applications requiring more forming before final aging.
| Temperamento | Melhor para | Key Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| T4 | Standard rivets, structural fasteners | Best shear/ductility balance for rivet driving |
| T42 | Spec-controlled rivets | Tight property ranges per purchaser agreement |
| T3 | Formed parts needing extra ductility | Higher elongation before aging |
2117-T4 is the industry-standard rivet alloy. Its shear strength (~185–210 MPa) is sufficient for structural joints, while its elongation (15–22%) ensures reliable cold heading and driving without cracking — the two essential properties for rivet performance.
The relatively low copper content (2.2–3.0%) gives 2117 better ductility than 2024 or 2014. This makes it suitable for heading, upsetting, and cold-forming operations common in fastener manufacturing.
2117 is not a high-strength structural alloy. Its tensile strength (295–340 MPa in T4) is adequate for shear-loaded joints but insufficient for primary structural members. For high-strength applications, use 2024 or 7075 instead.
2117 has moderate corrosion resistance — better than 2024 but not suitable for marine environments without protection. In aerospace construction, 2117 rivets are typically used with Alclad 2024 sheet, where the rivet and surrounding skin form a compatible dissimilar-metal joint.

2117-T4 provides the right balance of shear strength (~185–210 MPa) and ductility (15–22% elongation) for cold heading and rivet driving. The alloy can be upset and formed into rivet heads without cracking, and the driven rivet provides reliable shear-load performance.
2017 (AD rivet alloy) has higher shear strength but lower ductility than 2117. 2117 (A rivet alloy) is more forgiving during rivet driving and is preferred for standard structural joints. 2017 is used where higher shear strength is required.
Yes. 2117-T4 rivets are commonly used with 2024-T3 and Alclad 2024-T3 sheet in aircraft construction. The dissimilar-metal potential is minimal and is addressed by design standards (MIL-HDBK-5 / MMPDS).
Not recommended for structural welding. TIG welding is possible for non-critical repair, but riveting or mechanical fastening is the standard joining method for 2117 components.
T42 is 2117 that has been heat-treated to meet specific mechanical property ranges negotiated between purchaser and supplier, rather than the standard T4 minimums. It provides tighter control of properties for critical applications.
