What Is 6201 Aluminum?

6201 belongs to the 6000 series (Al-Mg-Si) and is optimized for electrical conductor use rather than general structural work. Compared with the classic 1350 EC grade, 6201 trades some conductivity for substantially higher strength, letting conductors carry heavier mechanical loads with smaller sags. The T81 temper (solution heat treated, cold worked, and artificially aged) delivers the best combination of strength and conductivity for overhead lines.

6201 wire is supplied drawn and aged; further cold working or re-aging is not normally required. It can be stranded, baked, and connectorized using standard utility practices. Anodizing is possible for identification but is uncommon on conductors. Welding of finished conductors is generally avoided; mechanical or compression joints are preferred.
