1050 aluminum alloy (UNS A91050) is a commercially pure aluminum grade in the 1000 series, with a minimum aluminum content of 99.5%. It is a non-heat-treatable alloy — its strength is developed through strain hardening (H-tempers) rather than heat treatment. The high purity gives 1050 its defining characteristics: excellent corrosion resistance, very high electrical and thermal conductivity, outstanding formability in the annealed (O) temper, and a clean, bright surface finish that takes well to anodizing.

With approximately 61% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard) electrical conductivity and around 222 W/m·K thermal conductivity, 1050 is widely used in electrical and thermal management applications. It is a cost-effective alternative to copper for busbars, cable sheathing, transformer windings, heat exchanger fins, and heat sinks.
Like all high-purity aluminum grades, 1050 forms a strong, self-healing oxide layer that provides excellent resistance to atmospheric, industrial, and marine corrosion. It also resists many chemicals, including nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide, making it suitable for chemical storage and processing equipment.
In the O temper, 1050 is exceptionally soft and ductile, excelling in deep drawing, spinning, stamping, and bending operations. This makes it a preferred material for lighting reflectors, cookware, decorative trim, and complex shaped components that require severe forming without cracking.
1050 is readily weldable using TIG, MIG, and resistance welding processes. The O temper is preferred for welded assemblies to avoid strength loss in the heat-affected zone. Machining 1050 requires sharp tools and proper clearance; it is gummy compared to alloyed grades but produces good surface finish when properly cut. Anodizing produces a bright, decorative finish on 1050 due to its high surface purity.
