What Is 5052 Aluminum Alloy?

5052 is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy in the 5xxx series, containing approximately 2.2–2.8% magnesium as its primary strengthening element. The magnesium content provides solid-solution strengthening, giving 5052 higher strength than alloys such as 3003 and 5050 without the need for heat treatment.

Its standout property is excelente resistencia a la corrosión, especially in marine and saltwater environments, which makes 5052 one of the most widely used alloys for boat hulls, fuel tanks, and other structures exposed to moisture. It also offers good weldability across all standard methods (TIG, MIG, resistance) and retains most of its strength in welded zones.

Sheet and coil are the most commonly ordered forms. H32 temper is the default for general-purpose sheet; O temper is preferred when maximum bend radius or deep-draw formability is required.

Choosing the right temper depends on your forming requirements versus the strength you need:

  • O (recocido) — Maximum formability, lowest strength. Use for deep draws, complex bends, and applications where forming is the priority.
  • H32 (1/4 Hard) — The most commonly stocked temper. Good balance of strength and formability. Suitable for marine panels, general sheet metal work, and moderate bending.
  • H34 (1/2 Hard) — Higher strength with reduced formability. Use when structural load-bearing is important and bending radius is generous.
  • H38 (Full Hard) — Maximum strain-hardened strength, minimal formability. Reserved for flat or lightly formed applications that demand the highest tensile and yield values.

If your application involves significant cold forming, start with O temper and specify the final temper only if post-forming strain hardening or partial annealing is planned.

Resistencia a la corrosión

5052 exhibits excellent resistance to saltwater, industrial atmospheres, and many chemicals. This is its primary advantage over 3xxx-series alloys. In marine environments, 5052 forms a stable oxide film that resists pitting and general corrosion. It is one of the most cost-effective marine-grade alloys, often compared with 5083 (higher Mg, higher strength, higher cost).

Soldabilidad

5052 welds readily using TIG, MIG, resistance, and gas methods. It does not suffer from hot cracking or significant strength loss in the weld zone. Welded joint efficiency typically exceeds 80% of base-metal strength for O and H32 tempers. No pre- or post-weld heat treatment is required.

Formabilidad

In the O temper, 5052 offers very good formability — suitable for deep drawing, spinning, and complex stamping. As temper increases (H32 → H34 → H38), formability decreases and minimum bend radii increase. H32 can still handle moderate bends; H34 and H38 require larger bend radii.

Non-Heat-Treatable Nature

5052 cannot be strengthened by solution heat treatment and artificial aging. All strength above the annealed level comes from cold working (strain hardening). This means H-series tempers will partially soften if exposed to moderate heating (above ~150°C) during processing — a factor to consider when planning post-forming welding or heat-based surface treatments.

Caution: H32 and H34 tempers will partially anneal if heated above approximately 150°C during processing. If post-welding or post-forming strength must be maintained, discuss temper recovery options with our engineering team.

Is 5052 stronger than 6061?

6061-T6 has higher ultimate tensile strength (~310 MPa) and yield strength (~275 MPa) than 5052-H32 (~260 MPa / ~130 MPa).
