Alliage d'aluminium 5059

5059 aluminum is a high-magnesium 5xxx-series alloy engineered for marine and structural service that demands the highest levels of seawater corrosion resistance and strength. With roughly 5.0-6.0% magnesium plus manganese, chromium, and a small zirconium addition, 5059 reaches tensile strengths comparable to many heat-treatable grades while staying fully weldable and non-heat-treatable. Linsy supplies 5059 sheet, plate, bar, tube, and profile in H116, H321, H131, and O tempers for naval, offshore, and pressure-vessel applications.

What Is 5059 Aluminum?

5059 aluminum is a high-magnesium 5xxx-series alloy developed for marine and structural applications that require the highest levels of corrosion resistance combined with strength. It carries approximately 5.0-6.0% magnesium, supported by manganese, chromium, and a deliberate zirconium addition that refines the grain structure and improves strength after welding. Because it is non-heat-treatable, 5059 is strengthened by strain hardening and is most often supplied in H116, H321, and H131 tempers for plate, sheet, and extrusions.

In practice 5059 is treated as a stronger, more corrosion-resistant successor to 5083. It is widely specified for naval vessels, LNG and chemical tankers, offshore platforms, and large welded storage tanks where long service life in seawater is mandatory.

Guide de sélection des tempéraments

  • H116 / H321 – Stabilized marine plate tempers. Best retained corrosion resistance after welding; the default choice for hulls, decks, and tanks.
  • H131 – Highest strength temper for structural members where weight saving matters.
  • H111 – Moderate strength with better formability than H116; general fabricated parts.
  • O – Fully softened for deep drawing, bending, and complex forming before work hardening.

Caractéristiques principales

Exceptional Seawater Corrosion Resistance

5059 offers the best exfoliation and stress-corrosion resistance among the high-Mg 5xxx alloys, especially in the H116/H321 tempers after welding.

High Strength Without Heat Treatment

Strain-hardened 5059 reaches tensile strengths near 400-440 MPa, rivalling some 6xxx and 7xxx tempers while remaining weldable.

Excellente soudabilité

5059 welds well with MIG and TIG processes. Use matching or 5xxx filler such as 5556 or 5183 to keep corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone.

Good Low-Temperature Toughness

Strength and toughness are retained at sub-zero temperatures, supporting LNG and cryogenic tank use.

Applications

  • Naval and coast-guard vessel hulls, superstructures, and decks
  • LNG and chemical tankers, cargo tanks, and process vessels
  • Offshore platforms and subsea structures
  • Récipients sous pression soudés et réservoirs de stockage
  • Bridges, transport frames, and crash-critical structural parts

Remarques concernant le traitement et la finition de surface

  • Usinage : 5059 machines comparably to other high-Mg alloys; use sharp tooling and moderate speeds to avoid built-up edge.
  • Soudage : MIG/TIG with 5xxx filler. Minimise heat input to preserve the H temper near the weld.
  • Formation : H116/H321 bend well along the rolling direction; verify minimum bend radius for thick plate.
  • Finition de surface : 5xxx alloys anodise to an uneven grey tone, so powder coating or PVC film is usually preferred for appearance. Mill finish, brushed, and PVC-protected options are available.

Documents relatifs à la qualité et contrôle qualité

Every 5059 order ships with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) covering chemical composition and mechanical properties. Third-party inspection and SGS test reports are available on request. Linsy’s production is managed under ISO 9001 quality, ISO 14001 environmental, and ISO 45001 occupational-health systems.

5059 Aluminum FAQ

Is 5059 the same as 5083?

No. 5059 is a stronger, zirconium-modified variant of 5083 with higher allowable magnesium and better strength after welding. Choose 5059 where maximum corrosion resistance and strength are required.

Can 5059 be anodized?

5xxx alloys anodise to a grey, sometimes uneven finish, so anodizing is not usually recommended for appearance. Powder coating or PVC film protection is preferred.

What filler should I use to weld 5059?

Use a matching or higher-Mg 5xxx filler such as 5556 or 5183 to maintain corrosion resistance in the weld zone. Confirm the exact filler with your welding procedure.

Which tempers are available?

Common tempers are O, H111, H116, H321, and H131. H116 and H321 are the standard marine plate tempers.

Quel est le délai de livraison habituel ?
