What Is 3105 Aluminum Alloy?

3105 aluminum alloy is a non-heat-treatable wrought Al-Mn (aluminum-manganese) alloy with a small magnesium addition, standardized as UNS A93105 and EN AW-AlMn0.5Mg0.5. Like other 3000-series alloys, 3105 derives its mechanical properties from cold working (strain hardening) rather than precipitation hardening, so its strength is controlled by the degree of cold reduction during rolling and expressed through the H temper designations (H12, H14, H16, H18, etc.).

With 0.30–0.80% manganese and 0.20–0.80% magnesium as its primary alloying elements, 3105 offers approximately 10–15% higher strength than 3003 aluminum while retaining the excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability that characterize the 3000 series. The magnesium addition is the key difference between 3105 and 3003 — it raises yield and tensile strength without significantly reducing ductility, making 3105 the preferred alloy for thin-gauge building applications where a modest strength premium is valuable.

3105 cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. Annealing (O temper) restores full softness, while controlled cold reduction produces the H1x strain-hardened tempers. This makes 3105 ideal for applications requiring roll forming, bending, stamping, or light deep drawing — most notably residential siding, corrugated roofing, mobile home panels, gutters, downspouts, and flashing. It is approved under major international standards including ASTM B209, ASTM B210, ASTM B211, ISO 6361, and EN 573-3.

Key Characteristics of 3105 Aluminum

Résistance à la corrosion

3105 aluminum offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, including in humid, industrial, and coastal environments. The manganese and magnesium additions do not significantly reduce corrosion performance, and 3105 performs well in contact with mild chemicals, fresh water, and food products. It is commonly used without protective coatings in siding, roofing, and flashing applications, though painted and PVDF-coated 3105 sheet is widely used in building exteriors for long-term weathering performance.

Formabilité et soudabilité

3105 shows outstanding cold formability in the O and H1x tempers. It can be roll formed, bent, stamped, spun, and lightly deep drawn — making it a first-choice material for residential siding profiles, corrugated roofing sheets, gutters, and fabricated flashings. For welding, 3105 is rated as highly weldable by all common methods including TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and resistance welding. Filler metal 4043 or 1100 is recommended for fusion welding. Note that welding will anneal the heat-affected zone, reducing local strength in cold-worked tempers.

Propriétés thermiques et électriques

3105 aluminum has good thermal conductivity (approximately 170–190 W/(m·K), varying with temper) and electrical conductivity of approximately 40–43% IACS. Its density is 2.71 g/cm³, and the melting range is 638–657°C. These properties make 3105 suitable for heat exchanger fins and thermal management applications where moderate thermal performance is sufficient, as well as for building applications where thermal expansion behavior matters.

Common Applications of 3105 Aluminum

L'industrie Applications Why 3105 Is Used
Bâtiment et construction Residential siding, corrugated roofing sheets, gutters, downspouts, flashing, fascia, soffit Corrosion resistance, formability, paint acceptance, modest strength premium over 3003

Alimentation et cuisine Cooking utensils, food trays, kitchen equipment Food-safe, good formability, thermal conductivity

Traitement et finition de surface

3105 aluminum supports a wide range of processing and surface treatment options:

  • Usinage CNC : 3105 is machinable in the harder tempers (H16/H18), but its softness in O temper makes it less suitable for precision machining. For tight-tolerance machined parts, consider 6061-T6 instead.
  • Découpe : Laser cutting, waterjet, and shearing are all suitable for 3105 sheet and plate. Laser cutting works best on thicknesses up to 6 mm.
  • Soudage : Très bonne soudabilité par TIG, MIG et soudage par résistance. Utiliser un métal d'apport 4043 pour le TIG/MIG. À noter que la zone affectée thermiquement se ramollit dans les états de durcissement par déformation à froid.
  • Anodisation : 3105 accepts clear and decorative anodizing. However, due to its manganese and magnesium content, the anodized finish will have a gray or yellowish tint — it will not produce the bright, clear finish of 6063 or 1100.
  • Polissage : Le polissage mécanique et chimique est possible, bien que cet alliage ne permette pas d'obtenir le fini miroir caractéristique des nuances de plus grande pureté.
  • Finitions de surface : Mill finish, PVDF/polyester paint, powder coating, PVC protective film, and embossed/stucco patterns are all standard options for 3105 building sheet.

3105 Aluminum FAQ

Q: What is 3105 aluminum used for?

A: 3105 aluminum is most commonly used for residential siding, corrugated roofing sheets, mobile home panels and skirting, gutters, downspouts, flashing, and general sheet metal fabrication. Its combination of corrosion resistance, formability, and a modest strength premium over 3003 makes it the dominant alloy for manufactured-housing cladding and residential building trim. It is also used for heat exchanger fins, signage, and storage tanks for mild chemicals.

Q: What is the difference between 3105 and 3003 aluminum?

A: Both are non-heat-treatable Al-Mn alloys in the 3000 series, but 3105 adds 0.20–0.80% magnesium while 3003 contains no intentional magnesium. The magnesium addition gives 3105 approximately 10–15% higher tensile and yield strength than 3003 in equivalent tempers, at a small cost premium. 3003 remains slightly more formable and is the more common general-purpose grade, while 3105 is preferred for siding and roofing where the extra strength is beneficial.

Q: Can 3105 aluminum be heat treated?

A: No. 3105 is a non-heat-treatable alloy — it belongs to the 3000 series (Al-Mn with Mg). Its strength is developed through cold working (strain hardening), not through solution heat treatment and aging like 6061 or 7075. The only thermal process applicable to 3105 is annealing (heating to approximately 340–410°C then cooling), which returns the material to its soft O temper condition.

Q: Is 3105 aluminum weldable?

A: Yes. 3105 is rated as highly weldable using TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), oxyacetylene, and resistance welding methods. Filler metal 4043 or 1100 is typically recommended. However, be aware that the heat-affected zone will soften in cold-worked tempers — the welded area reverts to near-O temper strength after welding.

Q: Can 3105 aluminum be anodized?

A: Yes, 3105 can be anodized, but the finish will have a gray or yellowish appearance rather than the bright, clear finish of purer grades like 1100 or 6063. This is due to the manganese and magnesium content. 3105 anodizing is suitable for protective or decorative applications where a bright or color-matched finish is not required. For building exteriors, painted (PVDF or polyester) 3105 sheet is far more common than anodizing.

Q: What is the European equivalent of 3105 aluminum?

A: The European equivalent of 3105 is EN AW-3105, with the chemical symbol designation EN AW-AlMn0.5Mg0.5 — reflecting the nominal 0.5% manganese and 0.5% magnesium content. It is covered by EN 485 (sheet, strip, and plate), EN 573-3 (chemical composition), EN 754 (cold-drawn tube), and EN 755 (extruded bar and tube). The UNS designation is A93105.

Q: Is 3105 stronger than 3003?

A: Yes, marginally. In equivalent tempers, 3105 typically offers 10–15% higher tensile and yield strength than 3003 thanks to its magnesium content. For example, 3105-H14 sheet reaches roughly 145–185 MPa tensile versus 140–180 MPa for 3003-H14. The difference is modest but meaningful for siding and roofing applications where the strength premium justifies the small price increase.

Q: Do you supply 3105 with an MTC?

A: Yes. Linsy issues a factory Mill Test Certificate (MTC) with every 3105 aluminum order, documenting the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensional inspection results for the specific material shipped. SGS test reports are also available on request.
