3103 is an aluminium-manganese wrought alloy designated EN AW-3103 (AlMn1) under European standard EN 573-3. It is the European counterpart to the more widely known aleación 3003 — sharing the same Al-Mn base, but with a slightly tighter copper limit (0.10% max) for improved corrosion performance in certain environments.
Belonging to the 3xxx series, 3103 is a aleación no tratable térmicamente, endurecible por deformación. Its mechanical properties are developed entirely through cold working (H tempers) rather than high-temperature thermal treatment. This makes temper selection the primary lever for adjusting strength and formability: O temper offers maximum ductility for deep drawing, while H14 and H16 provide structural strength for roofing, cladding, and formed components.
3103 matches 3003 in virtually all performance characteristics — corrosion resistance, density, thermal and electrical conductivity — making it the default specification in European markets where EN designation is required. It is widely used in corrugated roofing, heat exchangers, chemical equipment, kitchen utensils, and general sheet metal fabrication.
Sheet and coil are the dominant supply forms for 3103. Linsy stocks 3103 in O, H12, H14, H16, and H18 tempers, with cut-to-length, slitting, and blanking as standard processing options.

Composition per EN 573-3. The primary alloying element is manganese, which provides strength through solid-solution strengthening. The tighter copper limit (0.10% max vs. 3003’s 0.05–0.20%) gives 3103 marginally better corrosion resistance in specific environments. Trace elements chromium, zinc, and titanium are controlled within the “Others” limits above.
The mechanical properties of 3103 vary significantly with temper. The table below shows typical values per EN 485-2 for sheet at 1.2 mm thickness. Actual values may vary with product form, thickness, and processing history.
| Temple | Resistencia a la tracción (MPa) | Límite Elástico (MPa, mín) | Elongación (% mínimo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 100 – 150 | ≥35 | ≥23 |
| H12 | 130 – 180 | ≥90 | ≥6 |
| H14 | 145 – 200 | ≥120 | ≥5 |
| H16 | 165 – 220 | ≥150 | ≥4 |
| H18 | ≥185 | ≥165 | ≥3 |
Values shown are typical for 1.2 mm sheet per EN 485-2. Thinner gauge material may show higher strength and lower elongation. H2x tempers (strain-hardened and partially annealed) offer intermediate strengths with improved ductility compared to H1x equivalents — contact us for availability.

| O | Más bajo | Excelente — embutición profunda, estirado | Deep drawn cookware, complex stampings, spun parts |
| H12 | Bajo – Medio | Buena — conformado moderado | General sheet metal, lightly formed panels, enclosures |
| H14 | Medio | Moderada — curvado limitado | Corrugated roofing, siding, truck panels, storage tanks |
| H16 | Medio – Alto | Limitada — solo curvado suave | High-strength cladding, stiffener panels, structural sheet |
| H18 | Más alto | Mínima — aplicaciones planas | Fin stock, flat blanks, maximum stiffness requirements |
3103 offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, and many mild chemical environments — comparable to 3003 and other 3xxx series alloys. The manganese content contributes to a uniform, protective surface oxide. The tighter copper limit (0.10% max vs. 3003) provides marginally better performance in certain mildly acidic or condensation-prone environments.
In the O temper, 3103 exhibits outstanding formability suitable for deep drawing, stretching, and bending. Work-hardened tempers (H1x) progressively reduce formability but can still be bent, roll-formed, and stamped with appropriate tooling and bend radii. Minimum bend radius for H14 temper is approximately 0.5–1× thickness for 90° bends.
3103 can be welded by gas welding, resistance welding, and brazing. TIG and MIG welding are feasible but may require filler alloys (e.g., 4043 or 4047) to reduce hot-cracking risk. Brazing and soldering work well with appropriate flux. Mechanical fastening (riveting, bolting) is reliable in all tempers. For welded structures requiring consistently sound fusion welds, consider 5xxx series alloys as an alternative.
Like other Al-Mn alloys, 3103 offers good thermal conductivity (approximately 160 W/m·K at room temperature) and moderate electrical conductivity (approximately 40% IACS in O temper). These properties, combined with formability and corrosion resistance, make it a popular choice for heat exchanger and radiator applications.
As a non-heat-treatable alloy, 3103 gains all its strength from cold working. The work-hardening rate is moderate — faster than pure aluminum (1xxx) but slower than 5xxx alloys. Annealing at 345°C followed by slow cooling restores full softness for reworking.
Corte: 3103 sheet and plate can be sheared, slit, or saw-cut with standard aluminum tooling. Linsy provides cut-to-length and slitting services for sheet and coil. Precision saw cutting is available for bar and tube.
Conformado: For deep drawing and severe forming, specify O temper. For roll forming, press braking, and moderate bending, H14 or H16 are suitable. The work-hardening rate is moderate — multi-stage forming with intermediate annealing at 345°C is standard practice for complex geometries.
Recocido: Calentar a 345 °C, mantener el tiempo suficiente para asegurar el calentamiento completo y enfriar lentamente (enfriamiento en horno o al aire quieto). Evite el enfriamiento rápido, que puede causar distorsión en chapa delgada.
Acabado superficial: Mill finish is standard. 3103 can be chemically cleaned, etched, or conversion coated for improved paint adhesion. It is not recommended for decorative anodizing — the manganese content can produce a gray or mottled anodic coating. For anodized applications, consider 5xxx or 6xxx series alloys.

Q: How does 3103 compare to 3003 aluminum?
A: 3103 and 3003 share the same Al-Mn base and deliver virtually identical mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and formability. The key difference is chemical: 3103 limits copper to 0.10% max (per EN 573-3), while 3003 allows 0.05–0.20% Cu (per ASTM B209). 3103 is the European designation (EN AW-3103); 3003 is the American designation (AA 3003). Both are interchangeable in most applications.
Q: What is the 3103 equivalent in Chinese standards?
A: Under GB/T 3190, the alloy 3003 is the functional equivalent of 3103. Both are Al-Mn alloys with overlapping composition ranges. For Chinese-market projects specifying “3003,” 3103 material can generally be substituted with mutual agreement. Confirm with your end-user specification before substitution.
Q: Can 3103 aluminum be anodized?
A: 3103 is not a preferred anodizing alloy. The manganese content can produce a gray or mottled anodic coating rather than the clear, bright finish expected from 5xxx or 6xxx alloys. For decorative or architectural anodizing, consider 5005, 5052, or 6063.
Q: Is 3103 suitable for welding?
A: 3103 welds well with gas welding, resistance welding, and brazing. TIG and MIG welding are feasible but may require filler metal (e.g., 4043) to mitigate hot-cracking risk. For consistently welded structures, consider 5052 or 5083 as an alternative.
