What Is 1060 Aluminum Alloy?

1060 aluminum alloy (UNS A91060, EN AW-1060/Al99.6) is a commercially pure wrought aluminum grade in the 1xxx series, containing a minimum of 99.6% aluminum by weight. As a non-heat-treatable alloy, 1060 derives its properties entirely from its high-purity composition and cold working. It is recognized for its excellent corrosion resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, outstanding formability, and good reflectivity — making it a preferred material for electrical, chemical, and food-processing applications where strength is secondary to purity and chemical inertness.

1060 accepts both cold and hot forming well, is readily weldable by conventional methods including TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW), and responds well to anodizing and polishing. It is approved under major international standards including ASTM B209 (sheet and plate), ASTM B210 (drawn seamless tube), ASTM B211 (rolled or cold-finished bar, rod, and wire), ASTM B221 (extruded bar, rod, tube, and profiles), ISO 6361, and EN 573-3.

Guía para la selección del temple

1060 is a non-heat-treatable alloy in the 1xxx series. Its strength and formability are controlled entirely by the work-hardening condition (H temper) or the annealed state (O temper). There are no T tempers for 1060.

Temple Descripción Lo mejor para
O (recocido) Fully annealed — softest condition, maximum ductility Deep drawing, spinning, stamping, and complex forming operations
H12 Strain-hardened — Quarter-hard Moderate forming with slightly improved strength
H14 Strain-hardened — Half-hard General sheet metal work, moderate bending and forming
H16 Strain-hardened — Three-quarter hard Parts requiring higher strength with limited forming
H18 Strain-hardened — Full-hard, maximum strength from cold work Flat parts, chemical equipment panels, nameplates
H112 As-fabricated — suitable for products with no special strain hardening or thermal treatment control Plates and thicker sections used as-supplied

Important: H22, H24, and H26 tempers (strain-hardened and partially annealed) may also be available for 1060 aluminum. Contact us if you need these intermediate tempers.

Key Characteristics of 1060 Aluminum

Excepcional resistencia a la corrosión

With a minimum aluminum content of 99.6%, 1060 offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, and many chemical environments. The high purity minimizes intermetallic particles, reducing susceptibility to pitting and galvanic corrosion. 1060 is commonly used in chemical storage tanks, food processing equipment, and marine atmospheric environments where corrosion resistance is the primary requirement.

High Electrical & Thermal Conductivity

1060 aluminum has an electrical conductivity of approximately 61% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard) — among the highest of all aluminum alloys. Its thermal conductivity is approximately 234 W/m·K at 25°C. These properties make 1060 the material of choice for electrical bus bars, conductor wire, heat exchanger fins, and heat sink components in power electronics.

Outstanding Formability & Weldability

Pure aluminum 1060 exhibits excellent cold and hot formability. In the O temper, it can be deep-drawn, spun, stamped, and bent to tight radii without cracking. The alloy is readily weldable by TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding processes, as well as by resistance welding. Filler metal 1100 or 4043 is typically recommended for fusion welding of 1060. Note that weld zones will be in the annealed condition; if post-weld strength is required, consider the application context — 1060 is generally selected for corrosion resistance and conductivity rather than structural strength.

Aplicaciones comunes

Forming

1060 aluminum can be cold-formed in the O (annealed) temper to tight bend radii. H tempers offer progressively higher strength but reduced formability — choose the temper based on the severity of your forming requirements. For deep drawing operations, the O temper is recommended.

Mecanizado

Like most pure aluminum grades, 1060 is relatively soft and tends to be gummy during machining. Use sharp carbide or high-speed steel tools, adequate clearance angles, and proper lubrication or coolant for best results. For applications requiring extensive machining, consider if a harder alloy such as 5052 or 6061 may be more suitable.

Welding

1060 is highly weldable by TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW). Filler metal 1100 or 4043 is recommended. Resistance welding (spot and seam welding) also performs well on 1060 due to its high electrical conductivity. Note that the heat-affected zone (HAZ) reverts to the annealed (O) condition — if the application requires full temper strength after welding, post-weld cold working is typically not practical, and a different alloy selection may be more appropriate.

1060 Aluminum FAQ

What is 1060 aluminum?

1060 aluminum is a commercially pure wrought aluminum alloy containing at least 99.6% aluminum. It belongs to the 1xxx series and is non-heat-treatable. It is valued for its excellent corrosion resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, and outstanding formability.

Is 1060 aluminum heat-treatable?

No. 1060 is a 1xxx series pure aluminum and cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. Its mechanical properties are controlled entirely by cold working (strain hardening) — the H tempers (H12, H14, H18, etc.) indicate the degree of cold work. The softest condition is the O (annealed) temper.

What is the difference between 1060 and 1100 aluminum?

Both are pure aluminum grades in the 1xxx series. 1060 has a minimum aluminum content of 99.60%, while 1100 has a minimum of 99.00%. 1060 is purer, which means better corrosion resistance, higher electrical conductivity, and slightly softer mechanical properties. 1100 has slightly more alloying elements (primarily iron and silicon), giving it marginally higher strength. For most applications, they are functionally similar, and the choice often comes down to availability and cost. A detailed comparison blog post is available in our Related Resources section.

What tempers are available for 1060 aluminum?

Linsy supplies 1060 aluminum in O (annealed), H12 (quarter-hard), H14 (half-hard), H16 (three-quarter hard), H18 (full-hard), and H112 (as-fabricated) tempers. H22, H24, and H26 tempers (strain-hardened and partially annealed) may also be available. Note that 1060 does not have T tempers — if you see “T” temper designations for 1060, they are incorrect. Refer to the Temper Selection Guide above for temper descriptions and recommended applications.

Can 1060 aluminum be welded?

Yes. 1060 is highly weldable by TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and resistance welding methods. Recommended filler metals are 1100 (for matching purity) or 4043 (for improved fluidity). The weld heat-affected zone will be in the annealed condition — if post-weld strength is critical, evaluate whether a different alloy is more appropriate for your application.

What is the electrical conductivity of 1060 aluminum?

1060 aluminum in the O temper has an electrical conductivity of approximately 61% IACS at 20°C — one of the highest among aluminum alloys. This makes it a preferred material for electrical bus bars, conductors, and transformer components where aluminum weight savings are desired compared to copper.

Does Linsy provide MTC reports for 1060 aluminum?

Yes. Every order of 1060 aluminum from Linsy includes a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) documenting the heat number, full chemical composition, and mechanical properties for your specific production lot. SGS third-party test reports are also available on request for additional verification.

What is the typical lead time for custom 1060 aluminum orders?
