What Is 5082 Aluminum Wire?

5082 aluminum wire is drawn from the same AlMg4.5 alloy used for 5082 sheet and plate, but delivered as coiled or spooled wire. Being non-heat-treatable, its strength is set by the temper: O is soft and formable, H18 is strain-hardened to a medium level, and H38 is the strongest of the three. The wire keeps the alloy’s good corrosion resistance and weldability, making it useful for rivets, fasteners, and welded assemblies.

Note that 5082 wire is distinct from aluminum welding filler wire (such as 5356); 5082 wire is supplied for mechanical and forming use rather than as a welding consumable, though it can be used where its composition is acceptable to the procedure.
