Alambre de aluminio 5056-O/H32/H34

5056 aluminum wire is a high-magnesium, non-heat-treatable Al-Mg-Cr alloy supplied on spools and coils for welding filler, rivets, fasteners and marine applications. With magnesium content higher than 5356 and excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, 5056 wire is the preferred choice for welding magnesium-rich 5xxx base alloys and for service in harsh, chloride-bearing environments. Linsy produces 5056 wire in O, H32, H34 and H111 tempers with custom diameters, controlled surface quality and full mill certification.

What Is 5056 Aluminum Wire?

5056 aluminum wire is an Al-Mg-Cr alloy in the 5000 series. It is non-heat-treatable, so its strength is developed through cold work and strain hardening rather than solution or precipitation treatment. The alloy contains approximately 4.5–5.6% magnesium and 0.05–0.20% chromium, giving it a combination of high strength, good weldability and outstanding resistance to marine and industrial atmospheres.

5056 wire is most commonly used as a filler metal for welding magnesium-rich 5xxx alloys, and as cold-heading or rivet wire where strength and corrosion resistance are both required. It is supplied in O (annealed), H32 (quarter-hard), H34 (half-hard) and H111 (lightly worked, annealed) tempers. Equivalent designations include UNS A95056, EN AW-5056 (AlMg5Cr), JIS A5056 and GB/T 3190 5056.

5056 Wire for Welding and Rivet Applications

Beside general mechanical wire, 5056 is widely requested as a welding filler wire and as cold-heading wire for rivets and fasteners. The O temper is used when the wire must be bent, formed or headed before service; the H32 and H34 tempers provide the higher as-received strength needed for structural fasteners and spring-tension components.

Typical electrical conductivity is approximately 27–29% IACS and thermal conductivity is in the range of 117–130 W/(m·K), depending on temper and diameter.

Guía para la selección del temple

  • O – Annealed: Maximum ductility and formability. Use when the wire will be bent, headed, crimped or formed into complex shapes before going into service.
  • H32 – Quarter-hard: A good balance of strength and ductility. Suitable for general structural fasteners, rivets and lightly stressed brackets.
  • H34 – Half-hard: Higher strength with reduced but still useful ductility. Choose for pins, clips, springs and fasteners where higher load-carrying capacity is needed.
  • H111 – Lightly worked, annealed: Similar to O but with slightly better surface finish and dimensional consistency. Often used for decorative or precision wiring and for lightly formed parts.

Key Characteristics of 5056 Aluminum Wire

High Strength for a Non-Heat-Treatable Alloy

The magnesium content of 5056 makes it one of the stronger 5xxx alloys in the cold-worked condition. H34 temper wire can reach tensile strengths above 400 MPa while remaining weldable and corrosion resistant.

Excellent Marine and Industrial Corrosion Resistance

The Mg-Cr combination forms a stable protective film, giving 5056 very good resistance to seawater, salt spray and humid industrial environments. This makes it a natural choice for marine fittings, coastal structures and offshore hardware.

Good Weldability as a Filler Metal

5056 is frequently used as a filler wire for gas-metal-arc (MIG) and gas-tungsten-arc (TIG) welding of 5083, 5086 and 5456 base alloys. The chemistry matches the base-metal Mg level closely, producing weld metal with compatible strength and corrosion behavior.

Work-Hardening, Not Heat-Treatable

Strength is controlled by cold drawing and annealing, not by heat treatment. This is an advantage for wire producers because properties are stable during shipping and storage, but it means users cannot increase strength by artificial aging.

Storage and Handling Cautions

High-magnesium aluminum alloys can be sensitive to stress-corrosion cracking if stored in warm, corrosive environments after heavy cold work. Store coils in a dry location and avoid contact with copper, steel or chloride salts.

Aplicaciones comunes

  • Welding rods and filler wire for 5083, 5086 and 5456 alloys
  • Marine components, railings, fasteners and rigging
  • Pressure vessels and cryogenic tanks
  • Structural fabrication in corrosive environments
  • Rivets, pins, clips and cold-headed fasteners
  • Electrical grounding and braided shielding (where conductivity is acceptable)

Notas sobre el procesamiento y el acabado superficial

5056 wire is produced by cold drawing from redraw rod, followed by annealing (for O and H111) or controlled cold reduction (for H32 and H34). Straightening, cutting and surface cleaning can be performed as final operations. Linsy can supply the wire on DIN spools, random-wound coils or as precision-cut lengths.

Surface finishes normally include mill finish with a light oxide film; optional cleaning, degreasing and PVC wrapping are available for applications requiring bright, contaminant-free wire before welding or anodizing. Because 5056 is often used as a welding filler, surface cleanliness is critical: avoid copper or steel contamination and keep the wire dry until use.

5056 Aluminum FAQ

What is the difference between 5056 and 5356 aluminum wire?
5056 contains more magnesium and is typically used as a filler wire for 5xxx alloys and as rivet/fastener wire. 5356 is a more common general-purpose welding filler with slightly lower magnesium and better feeding characteristics in some MIG setups.

Can 5056 wire be used to weld 6061 aluminum?
It is not the recommended choice. 5056 filler creates a weld metal that is much higher in magnesium than 6061, which can lead to crack sensitivity and reduced color match. For 6061, 5356 or 4043 filler is normally preferred.

Which temper should I choose for rivets?
O temper is easiest to drive and form; H32 is often used for structural rivets that must retain higher shear strength. The best choice depends on the rivet diameter and the required shear load.

Does 5056 wire need special storage?
Store in a dry, covered area. High-magnesium alloys can be sensitive to stress corrosion if exposed to chloride or warm, humid conditions after heavy cold work. Keep the wire free of copper, steel or grease contamination.

Is a mill test certificate included?
Yes. Every Linsy order is shipped with an MTC showing the chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensional results for the heat supplied.
