What Is 3014 Aluminum Alloy?

3014 aluminum alloy is an Al-Mn (aluminum-manganese) wrought alloy belonging to the 3000 series. Standardized as UNS A93014, it is a non-heat-treatable alloy that gains its mechanical properties through cold working (strain hardening), expressed by H temper designations such as H14, H16, and H18. This is fundamentally different from heat-treatable alloys like 6061 or 7075 — the strength of 3014 is controlled by the degree of cold reduction during rolling or forming.

With 1.0–1.5% manganese as its primary alloying element, 3014 provides approximately 10–15% higher strength than commercially pure 1100 aluminum while retaining excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. Its combination of strength and deep-drawing capability makes 3014 especially suitable for drawn components such as beverage can bodies, heat exchanger tubes, and fin stock.

3014 cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. Annealing (O temper) restores full ductility, while controlled cold reduction produces the H1x strain-hardened tempers. This makes 3014 ideal for applications requiring extensive forming operations — deep drawing, spinning, stamping, and roll forming.

Processing & Surface Finishing

3014 aluminum supports a range of processing and surface treatment options:

  • Usinage CNC : Good machinability; recommended carbide tools with moderate cutting speeds for H14 and harder tempers.
  • Laser & waterjet cutting: Excellent for sheet and plate; minimal thermal distortion due to high thermal conductivity.
  • Soudage : TIG and MIG welding with 1100 or 3003 filler rods; very good weldability with no significant loss of strength in the weld zone for O temper.
  • Anodisation : 3014 can be anodized, but like other 3xxx alloys, the anodic coating tends to display a gray-yellow tint rather than clear silver. For color-critical applications, consider alternative surface treatments such as painting or powder coating.
  • Polissage : Mechanical and chemical polishing produce good results on 3014 sheet; suitable for decorative and kitchenware surfaces.

Questions fréquemment posées

Product-Specific FAQs

What is the difference between 3014 and 3003 aluminum?

3014 has a slightly higher silicon content (up to 0.30%) compared to 3003 (up to 0.60%), which gives 3014 marginally higher strength. Both are non-heat-treatable Al-Mn alloys with excellent formability, but 3014 is more commonly used for drawn can bodies and heat exchanger fins where higher strength-to-formability ratio is needed.

Can 3014 aluminum be heat treated?

No. 3014 is a non-heat-treatable alloy. Its strength comes from cold working (strain hardening). The only way to change its mechanical properties is through annealing (O temper) or varying the degree of cold reduction to achieve H14, H16, or H18 tempers.

Is 3014 aluminum suitable for deep drawing?

Yes. 3014-O temper offers excellent deep-drawing formability, making it one of the preferred alloys for beverage can body stock and drawn container applications. The alloy maintains good ductility even in H14 temper.

What filler rod should I use for welding 3014?

1100 or 3003 aluminum filler rods are recommended for TIG and MIG welding of 3014. These provide good weld integrity without cracking. Avoid using 4043 or 5356 filler on thin 3014 sheet as they can alter the corrosion resistance profile.

Does 3014 aluminum anodize well?

3014 can be anodized, but the Mn content produces a gray-yellow tint rather than a clear silver finish. For decorative or color-critical applications, painting or powder coating may yield more consistent aesthetic results.

What is the melting range of 3014 aluminum?

The melting range of 3014 aluminum alloy is approximately 640–655 °C (1184–1211 °F).

What standards cover 3014 aluminum products?

3014 products are covered by ASTM B209 (sheet/plate), ASTM B210 (drawn tube), ASTM B211 (bar/rod), ISO 6361, EN 485, and EN 573-3. These standards define the chemical composition limits, mechanical property ranges, and dimensional tolerances.

Is 3014 aluminum corrosion resistant?

Yes. 3014 has very good atmospheric and freshwater corrosion resistance, similar to other 3xxx Al-Mn alloys. It performs well in outdoor, roofing, and chemical storage applications. It is not recommended for continuous seawater immersion without protective coating.
